Racism in football

I play football with a lad who's black. He's bling and I've called him it to his face. The reason is because he is bling and it isn't offensive, to me or him. It's a bit of a joke obviously but he would be the first to admit he's bling. The lasses love him so I doubt if he gives a shit about me ribbing him for it.

49339

alex. do me a favour. away from your very interesting story...(did you call him "bling" or say "bling bastard who i hope dies?")

why have people failed ot describe the very 'bling' Craig Bellamy 'a bling bastard'

49345

The comment 'he's a bling bastard who should die' or whatever was obviously distasteful and I don't agree with it. But one person has said it on here. I don't think it is necessarily racist. What point are you making? That one person has said something on here that you deem to be racist? Is that it? If so fine.

49353

do you think the terms he used and the context had a racist tone?

49364

No, but I'm sure he can speak for himself. I know Alberto quite well (his Dad and my Dad used to play football together) and he isn't racist to the best on my knowledge. I think he meant Jenas is a flash bastard although he obviously went over the top with his comments re: him deserving to die. At any time though please feel free to answer any of the questions I've asked you in this thread ;)

49370

I have . Ask them. You get an answer.

I Repeat. Was the comment made racist in tone?

You have little idea. Enjoy school next week.

Why not CB?

49373

I repeat no. You're very patronising, you're a school teacher on half-term, right?

49376

Not for the first time. Wrong. Wouldnt get out of bed for a teachers salary.

Your a side light?

go to about page 3 or 4 and see the BBC link. Then apologise.

Like you have everytime someone has pointed out to you that you were incorrect in this thread you mean? :icon_lol:

49372

Not surprisingly, bling is often dismissed as a shallow and crass celebration of material wealth. But as a new documentary for 1Xtra, the BBC's black music radio station, explains, its origins are far from superficial.

HOW BLING CAME TO BE

'Bling-bling' was coined in the late 90s

Rap family the Cash Money Millionaires credited with thinking up the word

Used as a song title by Cash Money artist Baby Gangsta

... the evolution of black music and image back to the civil rights movement in 1960s America.

49374

Eh? white people make "Black Music" you mong.

49377

Dear God. You really are that thick arent you?

I'm failing to see how that BBC quote states that bling describes a "black dress-code". I'm well aware of the origins of the word but I'm baffled. If a word originates in a certain culture its use always has conotations towards that culture?

Do you really want me to explain how stupid that is? btw all page 3 taught me was what an ignorant pillock you've been to the members of this forum, hadn't realised. Won't make the mistake of treating you with the respect I had been showing, in spite of your increasingly ludicrous* arguments.

*See that's actually racialist because I've been offensive to you using the name of a well known black rapper and figure-head for the African American community.

I doubt they will confuse me with a Chinaman to be honest but I get the point.

You mention our society. What is 'our' society? It has changed time and time again for the last (at least) 2000 years.

the world has shrunk. We are multi-cultural. In name alone most of the time.

White has no negative connotation because we are white. It isnt used negatively either. I constantly get people writing things saying things that cant be used 'black market' for example.

49367

What is 'our' society? Well Newcastle, England, Britain, possibly Europe now.

Again you have presumed that I'm white. Why?

And I would challenge your claim that white has no negative connotation because I'm white. All theat is good and wholsome and pure and clean is white. All that is bad, ugly, dirty, evil, dark and angry is black. This is simply the history of language, but it is white people who've developed the English language isn't it?

Blackmarket is negative too, the shady underworld. Daft that you can't use it like. Tell the racist cunt to fuck off!

I still really don't understand how the word bastard makes it racist?

That you dont understand what the term 'culture' means is your problem. Read Bruner. He explains it perfectly.

Yes , if it orginates in black culture and you read into it further then it is a facet of contemporary black culture.

I'm afraid that whilst we have people who choose to ignore racism and its different nuances and connotations simply because they cant undertand then we have a problem.

People can spend far too much time on these things. There was a guy along my row back in the day who kept calling Darren Peacock a "fucking poof". Sure, I could have explained to him that no self-respecting gay man would ever be seen in public with hair like that, or I could have yapped on to my mates for days about how it just serves to underline the inherent homophobia in my row at SJP, the entire crowd, the entire city of Newcastle, the world... but what's the point? It's just one person's prejudice at the end of the day. And even if plenty of people share it, I'm confident enough to believe that the majority are more enlightened and the trend's going in the right direction, just like I believe is the case for racism, so why worry too much about a minority who are becoming increasingly unfashionable? Just relax and let it happen...

Sweet fucking god, the irony.

You still haven't explained why adding the word "bastard" makes it racist? Does adding the word "cunt" or "fucker" make it racist too?

Absolutely appalling grammar from someone who wouldn't get out of bed for a teacher's salary btw.

Is this because you are, in fact, a bling bastard?

Pedantic yes, but then again Bez is calling everyone stupid on the basis that they don't necessarily agree with him/her so I feel it was justfied ;) Were you the person who registered as 'not a racist' by the way Bez?

So where would you draw the line exactly? How many years after a term is coined is it no longer offensive to that culture to use it in an offensive manner?

I haven't read Bruner but I shall have a look. I don't feel handicapped by my obvious intellectual inferiority to your good self on this issue, though, thanks for your concern.

EDIT: It's funny, you keep accusing other people of not understanding the subtle nuances and complexities of the racism debate and yet you're the only person I've seen in this thread that's incapable of seeing the whole picture and reducing arguments beyond their simplest components. Not to mention the name-calling and pseudo-intellectual gamesmanship.

I'm going to go with 1st year sociology student.

Good point. Given the ignorant comments on here I dont share your optimism though.

As ever it becomes less of debate and more of a 'i want to win' argument for bairns on half term.

It is disappointing that people feel the need to trivialise the issue simply because they cant understand it.

That is what propogates the problem and gives it life.

Is telling someone that they are trivialising something they can't understand the same as not being able to explain your argument? It looks like that sort of cop out from where I'm sitting. No doubt that makes me stupid though.

I have little problem with you. More with the attitude that trivialises it.

There are plenty of examples. This issue was one i raised as a reminder of KROF day.

Bairns like sima and Alex arent bright or mature enough. You might be.

Bruner would help you get the picture though. I can post you a copy if you wish.

Racism is one strike and out. There are plenty of example in N-Os history where that hasnt been the case and some very odd examples of people on here going well overboard and probably saying something just a shade away from criminal. I am absolutely certain (as are my colleagues) that in 3 years time Albert Kirkleys comments will be criminal in context.
