SAFC fans' web call to taunt NUFC supporters

Recommended Posts

AN internet call has been made for Sunderland fans to taunt the Toon Army.

A message board user is encouraging Black Cats fans to go into the visitors’ end during Newcastle’s final home game of the season against Fulham on May 16.

Northumbria Police today pledged there would be “appropriate” policing in place for the fixture.

Away teams at St James’s Park can be given as many as 3,000 tickets to follow their team.

But it’s thought the long trip north, the fact Fulham have nothing to play for and the London club’s traditionally small travelling support could mean only hundreds bother to make the journey.

Sunderland fans are now planning to buy up the excess tickets and taunt the Newcastle faithful.

They have been waiting 22 years for such an opportunity after Newcastle fans pulled the same trick when the Black Cats were relegated in 1987. Back then, hundreds of Toon supporters travelled to Roker Park to attend a second leg relegation play-off against Gillingham, which saw the Wearsiders relegated to the old 3rd Division.

The internet campaign has been started on a football fans forum by one member known only as GMC1982. GMC1982 has been asking the advice from Fulham fans on the best way to get hold of away supporters tickets for the match.

He said: “In 1987, when Sunderland were relegated to the old 3rd division, hundreds of Newcastle fans attended in the away end in hope of witnessing the lowest moment in the club’s history.

“That was the day most believe our rivalry turned into sheer hatred.

“Everyone who attended that day has had to wait a long time for some kind of revenge.

“When Fulham go to Sid James Park if Sunderland are safe that day, and its a big if, a lot of Sunderland fans are planning attending that game in the Fulham end in hope of witnessing something on par with Gillingham in 1987.”

Both Sunderland and Newcastle each have three games left this season. Sunderland are currently sitting on 35 points with Newcastle in the relegation zone on 31.

A Northumbria Police spokesman said: “The last home match of the season tends to be a big event. We are well aware of the intense rivalries between Sunderland and Newcastle fans and our policing on the day will be appropriate.”

Malcolm Shiels, a committee member of the Newcastle Untied Supporters Club, said: “I basically think the plan is a little bit sad. Sunderland will be far from safe by then themselves.

“They could still go down and they should be concentrating on doing all they can to support their team in the relegation battle rather than coming to Newcastle.

“That is what Newcastle fans will be doing and I suggest Sunderland fans do the same. If the plan does go ahead I think it could cause problems for policing.

How hilarious would it be if a win that day sent us above them?

That is something I would just luv to happen. These arsewipes have been obsessed with us for far too long - it's actually bordering on stalking.

Getting tickets for the away end when their arch enemy could be relegated? How original.... :D

They're obviously still bitter about the game against Gillingham in the 'old style' play offs back in 1987. ;) What a glorious night that was!

It was a Sunday afternoon - I remember sitting in the bath after playing football listening to Metro, Charles Harrison: "Oh My God - Cascarino has scored again" is enshrined in my memory for eternity.

Indeed it was, I was getting mixed up by the first leg which was mid-week IIRC. In any case the outcome was superb ;)

Weren't there some of our lot in the Fulwell End and Clock Stand, as well as in among the Gillingham fans, when the game kicked off and had to be escorted to the Seaburn end (if that's the correct name) during the game? There are photos of this happening knocking about somewhere.

You may be thinking of the derby in 85 - that was when there was loads in the Fullwell.

Guest Stevie
I welcome them to.

Get some atmosphere going that the Fulham fans never would.

Spoken like a friendly rivalry Sand dancer.

been said before (by stevie I think) that they'd be happy to finish 18th as long as we were 19th, they don't so much support sunderland as support whoever we're playing against

Been saying this for years, far more concerned on watching us fail than they are watching them "succeed"

what do you reckon the chances are that some Newcastle supporters do the same thing, purposely looking for a little bit of fisty cuffs with the unwashed?...

...could be more entertaining to watch than the game!
