NEWCASTLE are lining up a cheeky swoop for Paul Scholes.

But the Magpies face competition for the Manchester United legend from Premier League outfits Bolton Wanderers and Stoke City.

United are expected to appoint Alan Shearer as manager early this week, and will hand their new boss a £20 million transfer warchest.

Part of that could be pumped into a £5 million bid for Leeds United striker Jermaine Beckford - with Michael Owen attracting interest from Everton and Fiorentina weighing up a move Obafemi Martins.

But Shearer is keen to put in place a new era of dedicated professionalism at St James’s Park, and the Sunday Sun understands Scholes has been identified as the ideal role model to lead the way.

The 34-year-old signed a one-year extension to his contract last season, but has grown frustrated at his lack of first-team outings at Old Trafford.

Stoke are thought to have offered him a player-coach role and Bolton are prepared to match his £70,000-a-week wages.

Newcastle are trying to put an end to such salaries at the club but given that the Red Devils are unlikely to demand a fee for such a loyal servant, they could make an exception for Scholes.

In stark contrast, United WILL axe disgraced midfielder Joey Barton – despite his latest attempts to stay on Tyneside.

And the former Manchester City player could be offered a Premier League lifeline by Tottenham.

Shearer has stated his determination to rid the club of Barton, after a string of incidents culminated in their dressing room bust-up following his sending-off against Liverpool.

Yet Barton’s agent Willie McKay said: “Joey has three years left on his contract at Newcastle. He doesn’t want to leave.”

That will cut no ice with Shearer however, and once he is installed as manager Barton will be off-loaded - with Harry Redknapp understood to have made an enquiry about the player.

If there's any truth in this I'd be surprised. Nontheless, as good a player Scholes was signing him now would continue our long tradition of signing has beens (albeit a once brilliant one in PS) and would make me extremely pessimistic about our transfer policy once more.

If Ferguson lets him go it's because he's completely finished. Besides, 5 minutes on the phone with Nicky Butt and he'll know that the correct response to an offer to play for us is to tell us to fuck right off.

That assumes the story isn't total bollocks.

Agreed, I'm struggling to think of a time when Ferguson has sold a player to another English club that was still any good.

Phil Neville has done fine at Everton. Never a world beater obviously.

Another who's scored a fuck-load against us who would do precisely fuck all if he joined us.

All moot anyway, there's no way he's coming here. If he's leaving OT (and that's a massive if), he'll surely go to a club in the locality who are in the Premiership. Bolton, Blackburn or Burnley would seem a good shout.

Yeah, he always said he'd fancy playing for Oldham at the end of his career.

why would Shearer be promised a £20m war chest when the club is up for sale?

If Ashley sells the new owner...

1) may not want shearer

2) may give him more/less than £20m

3) may not want scholes/beckford

lazy journalism
