From the most reliable toon source out there as well.

Alan Shearer has been assured by the outgoing hierarchy at Newcastle United that the two groups leading the bidding for the club are intent on installing him as manager.

Shearer has received a progress report from Derek Llambias, the managing director, the tone of which was markedly upbeat. A takeover is still on course to be announced by the end of this month and the club's record goalscorer remains the sole managerial candidate of note.

To protect the integrity of the bidding process, neither Shearer, Llambias nor Mike Ashley, the owner, are aware of the identity of the interested parties, who are vying to buy the club for £100million. They have, however, been kept informed of developments and the nature of discussions by Seymour Pierce, the investment bank handling the sale.

Up to four groups - one of which is fronted by Freddy Shepherd, the club's former chairman - have been involved in substantive negotiations with Keith Harris, the executive chairman of Seymour Pierce, but two are understood to have moved ahead of the others in terms of demonstrating their financial strength and are eager to open talks with Shearer.

I'm still wondering whether Llambias has begun to consider relegation from the Premier League might be a possibility yet

i hope things speed up, I am fed up of watching SSN and Setanta (well not now ) and not hearing anything about our club which doesn't involve which team Michael Owen might end up.

From .com:

Big Wednesday

Next Wednesday, July 1st, is being tipped as a pivotal date in the immediate future of Newcastle United, with firm news expected by then of the ongoing takeover.

The players return for pre-season training that day and there's now cautious optimism that one bid from the reported four will have been accepted - and that Alan Shearer will be the winning bidders' preferred Manager.

On that basis, it's reported that Shearer has spoken to various players linked with moves away from the club who had been previously declared as "wanted on voyage", asking them not abandon ship. Habib Beye and Steven Taylor have been mentioned as falling into this category, but judging by comments from the agent of Peter Lovenkrands, the out-of-contract Dane isn't a priority.

Wednesday's Chronicle then claimed that club secretary Lee Charnley had travelled to London to liaise with the investment bank handling the sale. Shearer meanwhile is set to meet with club officials this week at a location tbc.

I'm more inclined to believe this because of the lack of direct quotes (if that makes any sense).

After Keegan walked and Keith Harris was brought in he was never out of the newspapers and off the radio talking about how good value the club was and how easy we were going to be to sell etc. It was clear he was trying to drum up business. The fact he hasn't been doing that yet suggests to me we might actually be in with a chance of changing hands.

25 December is being tipped as D-Day for toon fans anxious to hear news of the how the club's takeover is progressing. Weekly forecasts of D-Day have until now proved wide of the mark. However a club source who I've just made up said "This is the early Christmas present all the fans have been waiting for. Mike Ashley has always been serious about selling and this time it's going to go through in time for the new year". The resolution of the club's long running sale is good news for the club; with the approach of the January transfer window, there are fears that Shola Ameobi and Alan Smith might stay.

The Daily Mail:

Alan Shearer to land Newcastle job after being summoned to London for final Ashley talks

Alan Shearer is on the verge of being installed as Newcastle manager on a permanent basis as he heads for crunch talks with owner Mike Ashley and managing director Derek Llambias on Thursday.

Shearer has been waiting for news on the future of the troubled club, and has been in the dark over negotiations between several consortia, Ashley and former Football League chairman Keith Harris who has been given the remit to sell Newcastle.

Crunch talks: Shearer is set to be named Newcastle boss after talks in London

He has been summoned to a meeting with the current Newcastle board in London and is hoping to get the green light to take over the managerial reigns permanently.

Ashley and Llambias have said all along that they would only appoint Shearer if all prospective buyers backed that decision.

The former England skipper is now hoping to be in charge when the squad return for pre-season training on Wednesday, and has plans to offload several highly-paid members of his squad before they embark on a July tour of Holland and Ireland.

Meanwhile Stoke boss Tony Pulis has joined Hull counterpart Phil Brown by expressing his interest in signing Michael Owen, although he has admitted he did not receive the striker’s 32-page brochure.

Pulis said: ‘He would be a great signing for this football club and he can rest assured our fans would treat him as one of their own.’

Brown, meanwhile, has been fined £2,500 for improper conduct following his attack on referee Mike Riley after his side’s FA Cup defeat at Arsenal in March.

Regardless of the truth of the Mail article, I doubt Shearer can do any more to offload players than is already being done. It seems a bit silly to talk about him offloading players as if he only needs to wave his magic wand. Regardless of who Shearer wants to keep I expect the club has been frantically hawking around every member of the squad in a bid to cut costs and we've not shifted anyone yet.

It's signing players where there's an issue imo, I imagine nothing will have been done in that regard unless Shearer's been tapping up players. We're probably already well behind our rivals in the CCC, as widely pointed out on here already. It's piss poor really.
