Hernia operation for Shearer

Newcastle skipper Alan Shearer will travel to Munich for a hernia operation on Monday after helping his side claim a fourth successive victory.

The 35-year-old will head for Germany on Sunday and undergo surgery the following day, but is hopeful of returning for the Premiership trip to Chelsea in a fortnight's time, as is full-back Stephen Carr, who underwent a similar procedure on Thursday.

"Alan Shearer travels tomorrow and has a hernia operation in Munich on Monday," said manager Graeme Souness after seeing the Magpies beat Birmingham 1-0 at St James' Park.

"Stephen Carr had his on Thursday and I was at the training ground this morning and he was running at three-quarter pace.

"There's a lady who operates and she must do something different to everyone else because she gets them back very quickly. I'm hoping Alan and Stephen will be fit for a game in two weeks."
