Change of look for Higuita

PA Sport

Legendary Colombian goalkeeper Rene Higuita will cut an unfamiliar figure if he resumes his football career at the age of 39 with Ecuador club Aucas.

Higuita is unrecognisable from the star of the 1990 World Cup and the inventor of the pioneering 'scorpion kick' save against England in a friendly at Wembley.

The goalkeeper has had extensive plastic surgery in a reality TV show called Cambio Extremo (Extreme Change) in his native Colombia.

His flowing locks and wavy hair have gone, as have his facial moles, while his protruding lips have been thinned after five bouts of plastic surgery as viewers have voted on his new appearance.

Higuita's appearance has undergone an 80% change, according to the producers of the show.

Participants in the show look for a new image and undergo surgery according to the whims of the viewers.

Medellin-born Higuita played for Colombian sides Nacional, Millonarios, Pereira and Santa Fe, as well as Spain's Valladolid and Veracruz of Mexico.

Higuita, who won more than 70 caps, tested positive for a banned substance when playing for Aucas last October but at 39 hopes to return to action for the team from Ecuador.
