Funniest moment had to be when the BBC played a slow-mo of Smith bollocking Guttierez after wasting another opportunity. "Give it some fucking thought!" whilst pointing at the side of his head.

That was quality, and fully deserved.

Why would premiership teams keep coming in for our players if they have "found their level" in the CCC ??

To be honest I would drive Duff up to London for £4m because the quality we could get in the champ on a massively reduced wage is a far better option. Smith, Barton and Taylor would be players that no way should we be getting rid of

Do you not think the fact that Smith (because that's who people were referring to with the comment) looks to have found his level in the Championship because he's looked good so far in it and looked gash in the Premier League playing in a similar role?

No. Smith has loooked good/outsanding in the champ because he is playing below his level. Smith played how many PL games last year ?? and even so wasn't playing 100% fit in all of them.

He hasn't been that good man. He's looked good sitting in front of the back four. To contrast that, Smith's had about 1 good PL game for Newcastle and that was upfront. He's a woeful midfielder in PL terms.

I really disagree with you there he has always been able to play in the midfield, he played at Leeds for quite some time in the centre of midfield under the guidance of David Batty and excelled even at 20 years of age.

I no it will sound like I am just being biased towards him now but I have a lot of friends who still socialise with Smithy and let's just say he has had a few off the record approaches from a few small time PL clubs and you can work out the rest

He isn't that player any more though, is he? How many seasons was that ago? He's played about 30 PL games in midfield for Newcastle and been consistently shit in just about all of them. Nothing against the lad but since his last injury he doesn't seem to have the engine he once had and hasn't got the game to make up for that in other ways. That's in the Premier League, obviously. The Championship is slower so it's less of an issue.

A defensive midfielder playing comfortably below his level doesnt need to make a series of last ditch tackles that nearly get him sent off.

Exactly.

Far from last minute you tool, every one was well timed and howcome he didn't even recieve a yellow if they were sending off tackles

He did. Then he got a talking to for one about 5 minutes after that.

You always run the risk when you tackle whilst sliding on your arse

That's his game like and I don't have a problem with it as such. He'll pick up plenty more cards if he's a regular though.

I thought he had a decent game but would you not agree that some of the ott tackles he made were in non-danger areas of the field and therefore unnecassary.

I remember one he made and there was a gasp from the crowd as if we were all thinking 'if he doesn't get this ball he is off' - he did like so alls well

Aye, I think he has to realise he'll get booked on reputation as well even if there's minimal contact. Like you say too, it looks bad and is often in areas where the opponent's going nowhere.

I like the tackles that we've seen from Smith, Barton and the like. But controlled aggression is what's needed, not heedless fouls.

Smith's tackling is only of benefit if he's on the pitch. He was incredibly lucky to stay on the pitch as 7 out of 10 refs would have felt well within their rights to send him off.

If we had been away from home i think he would have gone - the treatment Barton is getting is nothing short of scandalous btw, you can tell the refs are itching to give him a card and the fact that the reading players were milking it didn't help

What goes around, comes around tbh. I thought Jonas and his imaginary card waving at WBA was nothing short of disgraceful.

smith definitely looks better up front but it's nice to see he's found his level as a central midfielder. i don't mind him playing in that position as long as we're in the championship. he clearly can't mix it with the best in that role though, evidence is there for all to see from his no-shows for us while we were in the top flight

He does? :icon_lol: I can recall one decent performance there in a Toon top, i.e. home to Arsenal, and even then he didn't provide a goal threat.
