E-I-E-I-E-I-O.......up the Fizzy Pop League we go!

Can we now start singing "when we win the title" instead of "when we get to Europe" again? :D

A win's a win. It wasn't particular convincing but we've got to learn to grind out results. SJP is either going to inspire teams (like tonight) or strike fear into them (like Saturday).

Support was great too.

The Times:

Shola Ameobi strikes to raise farther fragile Tyneside hopes

Newcastle United 1 Sheffield Wednesday 0

George Caulkin

Newcastle United is a club on the cusp of possibility. Barry Moat, for the second game in succession, was in the directors’ box at St James’ Park last night. Alan Shearer was present, Mike Ashley was not and a victorious team was hailed by a raucous and ridiculously deserving crowd. The sense of what could be was palpable.

And, yet, at present, they are also teetering on a precipice. Moat’s discussions with Barclays Bank about financing his prospective takeover of Newcastle are still to bring resolution, Shearer, his choice of manager, was merely a passionate spectator and Ashley’s absence was not significant. So near and all that.

Uncertainty flows through Tyneside — ten first-team players have left and only Danny Simpson, who made his debut on loan from Manchester United, has arrived — but somehow the side is revelling in it. Everybody knows that hope could evaporate, but the defiance has been heartening.

Unbeaten following their relegation, Newcastle share the lead of the Coca-Cola Championship courtesy of a narrow win against Sheffield Wednesday. Their inspiration was again Shola Ameobi, who has plundered four goals this season, although Steve Harper foiled a late chance for Francis Jeffers.

Ameobi’s personal renaissance is almost as improbable as that of his team, but the striker’s good form can scarcely be questioned. Fresh from inflicting a hat-trick upon Reading on Saturday he continued in the same manner, scoring the only goal of an enterprising and energetic first half.

A thudding long kick from Harper, the goalkeeper, was flicked on by Andrew Carroll, allowing Ameobi to control the ball on his chest and shoot from 12 yards. Route one-nil.

Wednesday were far from idle, but Steven Taylor and Fabricio Coloccini were barely troubled in the centre of the Newcastle defence. The difference was Ameobi, a player rising from entrenched underachievement to test Lee Grant, the Wednesday goalkeeper, with soaring and glancing headers.

The second half was less fluid and Newcastle, whose squad is size-zero skinny, demonstrated signs of fatigue, but both goalkeepers were obliged to repel similar episodes of danger.

A free kick from Ryan Taylor was punched away by Grant and Harper excelled in clearing a whipped effort from Michael Gray.

An attendance of nearly 44,000 was another example of the immense potential that lies simmering beneath the surface at Newcastle. As always, it just needs to be tapped.

Newcastle United (4-4-2): S Harper — D Simpson, S Taylor, F Coloccini, J Enrique — R Taylor (sub: D Guthrie, 90), K Nolan, A Smith, J Gutiérrez — S Ameobi (sub: N Ranger, 87), A Carroll (sub: Xisco, 58min). Substitutes not used: T Krul, D Guthrie, Geremi, K LuaLua,T Kadar. Booked: Smith, Coloccini, Taylor.

Sheffield Wednesday (4-4-2): L Grant — L Buxton, D Purse, R Wood, T Spurr — S McAllister (sub: E Esajas, 72), J O’Connor (sub: F Jeffers, 80), D Potter, M Gray (sub: T Miller, 73) — J Johnson, M Tudgay. Substitutes not used: R O’Donnell, R Hinds, M Beevers, F Simek. Booked: Buxton, Miller.

Referee: P Dowd.

That Sheff Wed fan's a tit though. He picked out (apart from the attendance stuff) the one person in that thread who thought we'd piss the league and then used it to push an agenda about us all being deluded etc.

No agenda. The rest of your thread is there for all to see. I have pointed this out already.

If you didn't have an agenda, why did you say the stuff backed up your pre-conceived notions of NUFC fans then? Especially when those views were not in the least way representative of the views on here?

What I said was most fans that I had come across in my town. Many of them up here are arrogant and your club for that very reason is not popular amongst supporters of many clubs in Scotland. Sad for your club and the numerous good supporters you most likely have, but nonetheless true in my experience.

As for an agenda I think it is fairly obvious that I don't have one. What would I gain from that? You seem to have very selective reading. Did you not read these bits?

"I'm sure many of your lads and lasses are dead on. I am no bellend or glue sniffer and I won't tar you all with the same brush. As I said I wanted to have a chat with your lads and I came across a post that was disrespectful and incorrect. As I said on my post on our forum unfortunately a large propotion of your fans in Scotland seem to be of the same ilk."

I've met many good Newcastle fans, as I have fans of every club. However as I said, many of your support in my experience, and especially in my home town are of the same mentality as Stevie.

:D You are entitled to think what you like mate but I have no agenda.

Fairly obvious you wanted to portray us in a certain way on your board. Anyone reading your thread on your board can see that. I'm not bothered to be honest. I don't have a view on Sheffield Wednesday fans as I've only met about 3 of them in my life. As for "You seem to have very selective reading" Mr. Kettle, meet Mr. Pot.

Think what you like I don't care.

:icon_lol: You are entitled to think what you like mate but I have no agenda.

This bloke thinks I'm a sweaty because I have Arthurs Seat in my pic.

Look mate if I was from Edinburgh I wouldn't be supporting an English club because David Hurst or Ginola was my hero as a kid, I'd support Hibs or Hearts, because they'd be my local clubs, and proper fans support their local clubs.

:nufc: I'm not a proper fan now. Do you not have any Newcastle fans elsewhere around the country? I take it they're not proper fans too?

Well, all I'll say is from my point of view I can't get my head round the fact how you can passionately get involved with a football club many miles from your area. To be fair to our KBJ's at least they've stayed with the team many of them so fair play to the odd one. Like imagine for you Hearts played Sheff Wed in the Champions League Final, how could you support Sheff Wed, when your home city will be set alight if the jambos win it?

I am originally from Hexham and supported Newcastle since i can remember as do my family and friends i now live 7 hours drive away in the west coast of Scotland, I travel to watch games around 1 a month and read News stories, forums, and spend countless hours keeping up with my team (as the wife says obsesive)as i say once a mag always a mag just cant help it.

First match I have NOT seen in 2 full seasons.

Saw the first 2 of this season on Setanta.

This one wasn't on Setanta and I couldn't get a stream and had to listen to a radio commentary.

What I wanna know is how did that Simpson look on his debut?

according to the radio "tidy" didn't do anything special, played simply didn't take risks and didnt get forward as much as expected

which seems alright to me to be honest we were under pressure a lot today, he can get forward more when hes grown into his role and when we're more in charge in a match

Back from the game, atmosphere was great attendance was 43,900.

Harper 8.5 - Did very well whenever called upon and denied their equaliser in the dying minutes.

Collocini 7 - Cleared most of whatever came his way, but surprisingly outmuscled most of the time.

Saylor 8 - Did all he can and slipped into midfield to dictate start of play.

Raylor 6.5 - Not really a right midfielder, had a good first half but struggled massively during the second. YET had a very good free kick saved.

Simpson 6.5 - No different than Raylor but surprisingly he passed the ball backwards every single time he got it, got to the nerves of the fans.

Enrique 9 - Simply MOTM or contender for MOTM for me, cleared every single thing that came on the left flank comfortably and dominated the left hand side

Nolan 6 - Poor game, just ran around and around.

Smith 7.5 - MUST learn to time his tackles better or he will be getting red cards soon, otherwise a good performance.

Jonas 7 - Typical Jonas, Huff and Puff no end product.

Carroll 7 - A threat but not inside the box, played a very good header which was the assist to Amoebi's goal.

Amoebi 7.5 - Good run, Good finish.... that was pretty much it that was the last of him for the rest of the game.

Find it hard to disagree with that.

Xisco was decent enough when he came on. Everyone around me went mental when he toed the ball out for a throw in from a pass, without taking into consideration said pass should've been a simple one to his feet but instead was high and wayward.

Dunno if this has been mentioned yet but I got it from another forum and thought it was worth mentioning.

as an aside shola scores and SEVEN players go to celebrate with him. harper was too far away.

guess who the remaining two are?

Jonas and Colo

yep.

hope they both f**k off.

Pretty poor attitude from them, they may think they're better than the Championship, but they certaintly don't look it.
