Butt to Burnley ?

NICKY Butt is considering his Newcastle United future amid the unprecedented turmoil at St James's Park.

With the start of the Championship season just a week away, the club remains rudderless and managerless, with a buyer seemingly no nearer being found by owner Mike Ashley.

And a disillusioned Butt – a candidate for the club captaincy for the cominADVERTISEMENTg campaign – may be the next big name to quit United, with Sebastien Bassong and Habib Beye likely to follow Obafemi Martins – who joined Wolfsburg yesterday – out of the exit door before the transfer window shuts.

Butt only signed a new one-year deal in January, but much has changed since then.

With the midfielder in the autumn of his career, he is unwilling to settle for second best, and he is acutely aware the chances of Newcastle returning to the Premier League at the first attempt have been badly hit by the paralysis at St James's Park.

The midfielder is out of tomorrow's final friendly at Dundee United and the season opener at West Bromwich Albion, having had an operation on a partially dislocated thumb last month.

However, Hughton and would-be manager Alan Shearer had pencilled him for a major role this season, with Butt the favourite to be handed the skipper's armband in the wake of Michael Owen's summer departure.

Meanwhile, Beye will also miss the Dundee United game, having travelled to Paris to see a specialist about a hip problem.

I'm more concerned about Beye than the pensioner.

He sooner Butt leaves the better, with his shite passing he was more often than not the opositions 12th man last season, also he must be one of the biggest earners at the club.

Him leaving would be good in my opinion. He stopped any of our younger players getting a run last season, and they reAlly couldn't have done much worse with the upshot being that they would be more experienced for this upcoming season.

Some of the stick he gets is shocking imo. One of the few who never went missing last season. His weaknesses were highlighted by the fact he was one of the only midfielders who ever took any responsibility. I know he's past it but he was one of the better performers last season and he gave his all.

I reckon because he stuck his head over the parapet he took alot of the flying bullets, whereas, alot of those cunts who hid and faked passion should have had a bit. Don't get me wrong I don't think he is great but others deserve as much shit. Even against Leeds the usual suspects went missing again for 60% of the game.

That's exactly what I'm getting at.

That's utter bullshit to be honest. He talked the talk on numerous occassions but continuously failed to walk the walk. Pushed upfield much higher than he should have been and consistently failed to get back with sufficient urgency. If you don't have the legs to get back, then don't push so high up. It's not like he was creating or scoring goals. Some people think he didn't go missing because he made 'hard' tackles. Quite a lot of the 'hard' tackles that he had to make were because he couldn't keep up with the pace of the game.

Nicky Butt was one of the few who gave a fuck last season. Sure he's past his best by a long short and had some shortcomings but he gave 100% and that's all you can ever ask of an invididual.

Alex is right - the stick he gets is unbelievable. Stick which is better aimed at those who quite clearly didn't give their all.

Fuck off man, I'm not going on like he's great because he flew into a few tackles now and again. If he ever did go chasing the ball it was because the likes of Nolan were just sitting there letting us get passed to death. You make it sound like he was playing in the Beardsley position. And without coming over all soopafan there's no way you can assess postional play properly off the telly either.

He had to do spadefuls mind when the likes of Guttirez, Nolan, Enrique et al would get into good upfield positions then inexplicably lose possession - its not really any wonder he got caught a couple of times

VERY true!!

deffo past his best but still one of wor best last season (not saying much i know!)

I think Butt is pretty much a model pro who tries his hardest. That's why he was played week in week out when his legs had obviously gone. Which is not his fault, he should have been a squad filler imo but was played as a first team regular and had no time to rest.

This.

He didn't play well for most of last season, but unlike some others, he actually had a decent excuse. He shouldn't have been anywhere near a first team regular, but he was called on to play and he did so, without any complaints. There are numerous other players that I would blame for what happened last season before I'd even get close to placing any of the blame on him.

I agree with most of the posts in this thread.

With the exception of Butt, most of our central midfielders went missing last season leaving Butt to provide the creativity which never is and never has been his game. It fell to him to do this along with his normal defensive duties. His defense splitting balls were pish but he's wasn't supposed to be the one providing them. However, he was still willing to take the responsibility as nobody else would.

He was one of the very few who came out of last season with any credit. He's clearly past his best but was still our best central midfielder by a country mile last season. Given the tiny amount of commitment shown by the majority of our squad last season, some of the abuse he gets is staggering.

Didn't realise I had wandered into the Butt family reunion. I'm not doubting that Niucky Butt tried harder than other players in midfield. My problem is that he flat out is not good enough. I know you can't fully assess someone's positional play when watching on television - but you can certainly see enoiugh to give a good indication. There was several goals last season that could easily have been averted if Butt (and others) had tracked back harder from midfield. In Butt's case he should never have been pressing so high. I know he was doing so in order to try to create or get goals - but as we all know that didn't work. You have to know your limitatio0ns to get the most out of what you can offer - Butt doesn't. I maintain that I'd have much rathered to see us give some younger players a chance last season in midfield. We were relegated anyway, so there is nothing really worse that could have happened. Butt is well and truly on the way out as we should all be able to admit. I'd have him in the squad for his experience and professionalism, but use him to help bring through the younger players - not to hold up their progression. Of late we've been shit at bringing young players through and giving them experience.

You haven't mate, we're just pointing out the facts.

Saying that Butt could have averted goals if he'd tracked back last season doesn't really back up the argument - it's already been pointed out that he was having more asked of him than he was capable of.

Butt gave 100% last year - we can't ask any more of him than that.

Not just that though, as has been explained. What people are basically saying is he took responsibility when others didn't. He is past his best and probably not good anymore but that argument (or similar) could be applied to most of the squad.
