Former kit salesman Geoff Sheard the man behind takeover

Published Date: 12 September 2008

GEOFF Sheard's first significant involvement with the commercial side of football came when he worked for sports manufacturer Asics in the Nineties.

Asics supplied kit for a number of leading English clubs, including Leeds, Newcastle and Blackburn, with Sheard working within the sales arm of the company.

He then got involved in working with a chain of sports shops, including running the club shop at Preston North End.

More recently he's worked as a consultant for a company called Sockatyes, which makes branded sock tie-ups for a range of professional clubs.

His role there has brought him into contact with various movers and shakers within the football world, including football agent Philip Morrison.

Sheard says it was Morrison who was originally contacted by investors wanting to buy into an English club and the agent then subsequently asked him to locate a suitable club.

Morrison did not respond when contacted by the Yorkshire Post.

How the investors would make money by buying control of Sheffield Wednesday remains as much a mystery as their actual identity, which has remained a closely guarded secret.

Sheard has said one is British and the other German, though neither have had any previous involvement with football.

Loosening the financial shackles would involve a huge investment with no guaranteed return, unless the club returned to the Premiership.

Although his home is an impressive restored barnhouse in Nether Kellet, near Lancaster, none of the money to buy control of Wednesday would come from Sheard.

Despite being based in Lancashire, family connections with Huddersfield Town meant Sheard's first footballing experiences were at the old Leeds Road ground.

But he has clearly developed an affinity with Wednesday, attending a clutch of matches this season, including the away match at Wolves. He plans to attend tomorrow's home game with Watford and travel to Reading for the away game on Tuesday.

Sheard, educated at the Royal Lancaster Grammar School, retains close links with his local community and regularly turns out as a cricketer for the village of Caton, near to his current home and where he used to live.

New bidder emerges for Newcastle United

Aug 25 2009 By Lee Ryder, Evening Chronicle

THE man who sold Newcastle United their first Premier League kit is hoping to become the new owner of the Magpies.

The Chronicle was today alerted to an official and recent approach from Geoff Sheard, who failed in a bid to take over Sheffield Wednesday last season.

Sheard is spearheading a North West-based consortium’s bid, which is understood to be backed by a renowned American company with a big interest in sport.

It is believed Sheard, who was also linked with a move with United last February after Mike Ashley had removed Newcastle from the market, would appoint Alan Shearer as manager if he was successful in his bid.

Sources close to Sheard also suggest the American company backing his bid also have sufficient funds to support the Magpies in the transfer market. But time is running out on that score, with a week to go before the window shuts.

United’s managing director Derek Llambias told the Chronicle: "Geoff is dealing with Keith Harris and we are still waiting for proof of funds."

Newcastle yesterday confirmed that Tyneside businessman Barry Moat is also in the running, albeit under pressure from a one-week deadline issued by Mike Ashley, and it is understood that Sheard responded to a request by Seymour Pierce to deposit the required amount into a lawyer’s client account.

A source close to Sheard said today: "He’s keen to run a football club.

"It didn’t work out when he tried to take over Sheffield Wednesday but feels he has something to offer Newcastle.

"He’s got serious backing and is in negotiations with Seymour Pierce."

Sheard’s first link with the Magpies was in 1993 during the Sir John Hall era at St James’s, when he worked on the sales team for sportswear brand Asics, who provided Newcastle with their first kit in the newly-formed Premier League.

Like current owner Ashley, Sheard also has experience of running sports shops. He oversaw the running of Preston North End’s club shop in the ’90s with the Deepdale side having several small outlets in the Lancashire town.

He then worked as a consultant for Sockatyes, who provide sock tie-ups to professional clubs.

Sheard is thought to have a wide range of contacts in the game and is well-connected with clubs on a global scale, including a clutch of sides in the US in Major League Soccer.

Sheard is based in Lancaster and lives in a restored barnhouse in Nether Kellet. Despite his bid for Sheff Wed, he is understood to be a boyhood fan of tomorrow night’s Carling Cup opponents Huddersfield.

When United was taken off the market in January, it emerged weeks later that Sheard had been linked with buying United amid claims he was seeking to bring David Beckham, then on loan to AC Milan from LA Galaxy, to St James’s as part of a deal.

I know this might be daft... but.. if Moat is just £10 Mil short of getting the deal done.. ie: Issue surrounding the OD.. then why does he not work on the basis of having another person on board.. To be honest .. jumping across a number of posts here..I beleive the money raised from players has gone to Mike's back pocket.. not into club books..

Lord of the Rings??? :icon_lol:

The Empire Strikes Back :icon_lol:

Looks like Uncle Fester to me. Realistically though, who is this guy? Does he have adequate funds? What association does he have with the club? Is he just another wannabe club owner who knows bugger all about how things should be run?

... and why not join forces with Moat and both own a stake?
