And as for the comparison between Jay Gatsby and Bill Sykes I mean, come on. I would also disagree regarding the similarities between Victorian London and 1920's America since any economic wealth of the Victorian age was pretty much restricted to a small, privileged minority whereas in the roaring 20's the 'man on the street' was able to buy stocks and shares allowing working class people to become upwardly mobile through their own enterprise. I'm not quite sure what having read a lot of Steinbeck would have to with novel in question either although I can certainly see more similarities between his work and that of Dickens.
