Our OB treat away fans visiting the toon terribly

Down the years I've heard first hand from people visiting Newcastle and SJP for football, say how terribly they're treat by the police and to some degree the stewards when they come to Tyneside. Read this from a Plymouth fan:

Just heard from a pal of mine, something not so right.

He booked a Trathens skyliner to go to Newcastle.

All booked, 14 of them paid £140.00 each, to leave at 1100pm on Friday.

on Thursday, the police contacted Trathens and told them the following:-

1) No coach could leave before 0400 hours on the Saturday.

2) If any coach arrived early, it would be pulled into Washington services and would wait until 1300 hours before being escorted in.

3) The police also wanted Trathens to supply the name and address and DoB of every person travelling on those coaches.

My pal and a few of his mates, who fancied all morning in the Toon (like thousands of us enjoyed) cancelled the coach as the goalposts had changed.

A few points.

Why the hell should the police ask for such details for people travelling on the coaches (I'm pro police, but this seems way OTT)?

Also, Trathens are now saying that the people who cancelled the coach will not get their money back, even though they bought their ticket expecting to be in Newcastle for about 0800 hrs on the day of the match.

Not exactly fair is it?

We're talking fucking Plymouth Argyle here, barbour jackets and straw in their hair. Complete and utter disgrace. It's not 50 Millwall turning up on Harry The Dog Coaches. There's never any trouble these days hardly anyway, the odd slap dished out here and there, but if you take Sunderland, Man Utd and Chelsea (once) out the equation, fucking no one ever turns up for a row, yet they treat Plymouth fans like this. Are they trying to make this city a police state carry on? To be honest, I've only seen our police be total cunts towards us once or twice, and largely let us away with a lot, but when it comes to away fans they are totalitarian of their treatment of them. Treat as you expect to beat treat yourself. I remember what South Yorkshire police used to be like towards us in the 1990s, total and complete bastards like you wouldn't believe, and it's shocking to think many people who come to SJP leave with the poor treatment from the toon OB as one of their lasting memories.

They are and have been building a country for years where they won't get any respect and will have to "rule" by intimidation and fear. From the 70s onwards, Blacks, Gays, Irish, football fans, Miners, various "hippy" protestors and probably most recently Muslims have joined the list of people who are assumed to be criminals because of the actions of a few.

I honestly think they will pay for it years to come. As that list of "scum" increases, they will find fewer and fewer people willing to excuse them and their excesses which will be reflected in people not wanting to join them all the way through to people looking the other way when they are in trouble.

I will have absolutely no sympathy for them when those days arrive.

Completely agree, seems way OTT. Part of the experience, especially when you've travelled that far, should be to enjoy the city, especially regarding the location of the ground.

Had to feel sorry for the Greens. Come all that way, get turned over by a shit Newcastle side, and then have a 10 hour trip home. Most people didn't have the option of staying over either because of the Great North run (hotels fully booked).

Agree - that's OTT.

After such a long trip, you'd want to break it up with a wander round the city. Hell, part of the away day experience for me is having a beer with the opposition fans, or at least talking to them. I can't help but think that those fans would be more likely to get upset due to them being crammed on coaches for so long.

Exactly - it's the old "treat them like animals" scenario. Controlling coaches may make sense when we play the Mackems or Boro but the simple fact that whoever makes these decisions can't see why Plymouth deserve a special case illustrates for me what utter cretins they are.

I think the "sanitisation" of Football which I've argued before has some elements I don't like, SHOULD have meant a change in attitude from the authorities leading to more flexibility. Theres another article in the Guardian today (as well as one about the Mackem CS debacle) about Stoke fans being mistreated bady in Manchester again (payback for the compen I'd guess) and once again featuring fans being forced to get trains back to the club town no matter where they've come from - something I've had to argue my way out of in the past.

I think it's the case that the police are feeling cocky at the moment with the anti-terror laws imbuing them (they think) with extra powers and convenient targets new or old are feeling the brunt of things.

I'm not naive enough to think daftness has been eradicated from Football but a lack of recognition of how things have changed is nothing short of criminal imo.

Seems OTT, but maybe thats why hooliganism is so rare these days?

Yeah simple - make going away so pointless nobody bothers anymore. Chuck in short notice time changes and we'll be laughing.

How about being baned for 5 years but not ever being arrested for anything? thats going on at the moment.

Some clubs like Cardiff now have bubble trips.

it has to be an infringement of human rights.

Aside from being used against the wrong people (eg Keith Barratt when they were meant to be for orgainsed firm members) I still don't get how banning orders are legal.

If you commit almost any other crime, once you have been punished or even served a sentence you are then free to pursue anything (obviously as long as its legal). As for getting banned for being a "bit dodgy", I can't help thinking that rather than being a panic measure introduced in haste, they were intended to test the water for other shite like control orders.

There were about 4 who tried to breach the gap between the Boro & WBA fans the other day. They managed to get across the fairly wide divide, but not quite far enough. All looking at banning orders, I would imagine for the next 3 years...
