It’s miles better than most flavoured and spiced offerings but you really should try the real thing.

You mean just Plantation rum? 

No because they almost always add sugar to their rum and their versions are aged in France rather than tropically. They’re cocktail rums much beloved of bartenders

It’s just spiced rum is basically a liqueur. There’s about two brands don’t add sugar but on the whole loads is added. If you like it that’s fine but it isn’t ‘rum’ to me in the same way Drambuie is completely different to whisky. The real villains, if you like, though are those producing things like Ron Zacapa and Bumbu. They market these as ‘premium’ products when they’re based on pretty young, neutral spirits that are flavoured and sweetened and this is marketed as being down to the ageing process. I don’t mind people liking them but they’re charging at least double what they should be. That said, the people who buy into brands like Zacapa probably deserve it
