Had a quick look to see if there was one of these and couldn't see one - Mods feel free to change title to specific question if you like....

Anyway.....

Can anyone remember why in the first series of Auf Weidersehen Pet, the lads referred to the Germans as "Erics"?

Commonish German name but a bit more subtle than Fritz or Franz or whatever?

In a roundabout way that's what made me think about it - a conversation at work which involved Fritzl which somehow make me think of why they didn't use "Fritz".

Wasnt it just so they could talk about the Germans without them realising ie a German would think they were talking about a colleague called Eric. Not sure how Eric was chosen though.

I don't think they were bothered if they knew or not though. Oz used to say to barman "HOW ADOLF!!! FAWA PILS OWA HERE PAL". So I don't think it was to do with sensitivity.

With regards to the Erik's a lot of krauts are called Erik, the formost person in communist East Germany was called Erik.

AWP is my favourite show ever, but there are inconsistencies which Roddam/La Franais are responsible for, I mean fuckin what self respecting geordie would gann to watch Sunderland in Bruges for anything but a row with the mackems????

I could see them going to meet up with Mackems they knew (sorry Stevie it happens) but the on spec/supporting them part of it was bollocks and always struck me as such.

Aye people from your vicinity. No one from Newcastle would ever dream of doing something like that, and I mean that.

To me what NJS said, epitomises the people in South Tyneside and the support they have for NUFC. It's a different world from here, I don't know one person who has a mackem friend, and a lot of it is through choice. There they socialise with them, have them as best men at weddings, live their lives with them, they're suspect cunts. Meeting up with mackems at a Sunderland away game abroad cos they're pally with them. Anyone from Newcastle would find the idea abhorrent, and anyone who doesn't think there's a difference between a South Tyneside NUFC fan and a Newcastle area one is fuckin blind.

It doesn't say why they're called Erics. It just says the context in which it was used.

On the subject of AWP, does anyone know where I can get the first series for cheap on DVD? I only have them on VHS (!) and that's just fucking archaic nowadays. I've not seen them since I was bed-ridden a few years ago and you lot seem to be bargain hunters.

£12 ebay brand new

I know you're a little bit younger than me Stevie and I would say it would probably be less likely in recent years. I think the rise of the "mackem" identity has intensified the rivalry to a certain extent - when I was a kid even though I didn't know anyone from Sunderland I just thought of them as supporting a different team, not as a politcally different species as is the view nowadays.

For the record everyone I would call a mate up until I was about 16 were NUFC fans - I do have a couple of good mates who support Sunderland (and who incidently don't call themselves Mackems) but they came a bit later and anything you say isn't going to change that.

As for being a different type of fan than "purebloods" perhaps you're right - I've always thought the fact that we mix with and know SAFC fans actually makes the rivalry more intense and to some degree enjoyable - whats the point of beating the twats if you can't brag to any of them?
