The former Spurs and Republic of Ireland assistant coach has excelled in the manager's chair at St James' Park following their relegation at the end of the 2008/9 season. Having bounced back at the first attempt, Hughton has also maintained the feel-good factor with the club's stunning 6-0 demolition of Aston Villa - the Magpies' biggest Premier League win for 11 years. Mirror Sport understands, however, that 51-year-old Hughton's current Newcastle deal runs only until the end of this current season. Talks have already taken place over new deal but the two parties have failed to agree terms with the offer to Hughton believed to be unsatisfactory. Newcastle have yet to come back with an improved offer since taking their original package off the table. It means Hughton's contract is set to run out at the end of this season. It also means, despite turning around a club that was on its knees last season, Hughton's job could yet be up for grabs at the end of the current campaign should the current owners - or new owners if they decide to sell - go for a bigger name. The London-born Irishman smashed his way back into the Premier League this summer by winning the Championship with Newcastle with 102 points and 90 goals. The club had previously been left in turmoil following it's plunge through the relegation trapdoor with Alan Shearer at the helm. Newcastle's return to the top flight is worth a minimum extra £30million a year for the club. Yet Hughton's biggest signings have arguably been those of Sol Campbell on a free and former Everton starlet Dan Gosling, also on a Bosman because of an administrative error. I was explaining my conspiracy theory to wor kid on Sunday that if Hughton keeps us up he'll be moved on for a bigger name as the clubs financial situation becomes rosier, if we go down he'll be offered another deal because we know he's capable of getting us up under the financial restraints Fat Mike imposes. I think they're right to give him a chance and not to have replaced him in the close season but I think they're also correct to wait and see how he does this year before offering him a new deal.
