Overall I like them. I'd like to see a little bit of shadow on the floor sometimes so it doesnt look like she is floating. I enjoy photographing kids as they aren't so reserved and tend to have fun. If you can capture that as you have here I think you are on to a winner. I've found photographing teens to be a nightmare! They just stand with that awkward "I really dont want to be here" look. If you were flush, you might also look into getting a fish-eye lens for something a little different. My next will be a wide angle though for landscapes.

The floating effect I dont like either, but I dont know how to keep the backdrop etc in without it looking horrid. The floor especially as once the kids start shuffling about on it it gets all scrunched up with big creases everywhere. I'm a fan of the close up head shots as it removes these problems lol.

Did another home studio shoot at the weekend, but got my lighting set up a bit wrong and had the lights too high, so over exposed upper half of heads and lots of shadowing elsewhere.

Not my best work by a long way, but lots of photoshopping just about saved the day (so glad I know how to use the dodge tool!!!). Compared to last weeks shoot these are pretty substandard IMO but you live and learn, and I now know the limitations of my setup and what to do to avoid the problem next time:

Mono as usual is my fave, though I think sometimes the background can seem too white? (4th from bottom). Nice set though, Im sure t hey were still over the moon with them.

Cheers mate, not given them to the people yet as still debating on making a couple of extra changes... although I think its getting to the stage of diminishing returns so not sure it's really going to make much difference.

Yeah backgrounds are a problem... I have to remove them and they end up too bright then as they are just pure white. I've experimented with off white etc but that looks too gray. The problem is that I know how to keep the background in, but to do so I'd have to blast it with 2 extra flashes and position the subject further away from the baxkdrop to avoid the light spillage. Unfortunately I neither have the extra flashes nor the room to move people further away from the backdrop

Well you could use anything, Faint feathers, bears balloons whatever. Or maybe a hint of colour. Very light blue etc. Just a thought!

Yeah something soft would be good... probs needs to be white as thats the original colour and putting a different colour in even if i've removed the old background wouldn't work too well (I tried it with black and the results looked like I'd switched the background).

I like the idea of faint feathers though, a soft and light coloured texture would work well :)

Nice one mate, really nice shots these, slightly akin to the modern "venture" style images. Second top is my fave, I like the fact its mono (my fave) and has some shadow. The full family shot is a really nice shot though maybe slightly over exposed with the young girl having such a fair complexion. Then again it can also be my monitor. If I look from a lower angle its much better. As portraits go, these are some of the best you have done imo. :)

Cheers mate :) No Idea what Venture style images are so not sure if that's a compliment or not lol ;)

I knew before I even posted them which would be your favourite... tbh that seems to be everyone's favourite but I know your a sucker for mono.

I think the family one is ever so slightly over exposed too in all fairness.. Setting up the home studio in someones living leaves the distance and angle of the flashes pretty much predetermined due to the lack of space, so once several people jump in to the shot and they are at different heights it gets a bit tricky to get everything exposed evenly. Maybe I should invest in a black reflector to take some of the light way in parts of the shot? Hadn't thought of that until you mentioned the pic so might go and get one of them :)

Cheers for the feedback, think I'm getting more comfortable with my home studio stuff and I agree these are some of the best I think I've done... also shot these with my 7D and the picture quality is definately more crisp than with my old camera.

I really should put more of my pics one here... can't believe the last thing I posted was the family shoot!

Oh well here's a couple of nice pics to kick things off again. Don't know if anyone is in to British Superbikes but these pics were taken at Oulton Park and are of rider Peter Hickman.

I was lucky enough to get access to his garage thanks to one of the sponsors (I was working for them doing some PR pics) and had about 2 mins in there before Hicky jumped on his bike and shot off... didn't have much time to plan shots and so the one on his bike could possibly have been a bitter better composed.

Was in London at the weekend for a stag do and had a little time between connecting trains on the way home... the weather was lovely so I set about doing a quick bit of street photography. Pics were just taken and processed on my iPhone.

Some good shots there Andy. Nice to see you doing more than just people as well :P

Actually I say that, one of the first things I was told was to to pick a style and stick to it. While I understand that to a degree, I think its nice to diversify.

Cheers mate, yeah it's good to try new things but I definately agree that finding a style and developing it is the best way to become proficient in a particular area.

No harm in occasionally dipping in to another style from time to time though, and I reckon photographing anything is better than just sitting at home bemoaning the lack of a model to shoot.

Wow it's been a long time since I posted in my images section!

Here's a link to my latest shoot - a commercial shoot for a local wedding boutique and salon.

Apologies that it's a link rather than embedding the images but I have some much to do that I've stopped upload to flickr and just to my site there days
