I won't walk away - Souness

GRAEME Souness has insisted he won't walk away from the Magpies hotseat.

The manager was criticised in some quarters after the Carling Cup exit at Wigan in midweek, but after chairman Freddy Shepherd urged everyone to stick together on nufc.co.uk on Thursday, Souness quashed rumours he is considering walking away.

Speaking at his pre-match press conference ahead of Saturday's meeting with Aston Villa, the manager said: "I've not read anything, but I understand I personally have been given a great deal of criticism.

"But that is the price on the ticket. I understand the fans disappointment, frustration and anger at the way we played at Wigan.

"I would not argue with anyone who says we were poor. We were bad on the night.

"That can happen to any team. We were just poor, and that can happen. It has happened before, and it can happen again."

When asked if he was considering leaving the job, he added: "I'll make it clear for everyone, that can never happen for a number of reasons.

"Because long after football, I have to look at myself in the mirror.

"When I'm shaving, when I'm brushing my hair - what's left of it - and it can never happen.

"It is a waste of time anyone ever asking that question.

"I believe I have the backing of the players. We have an honest, hard-working group of players who have had a bad game and a half.

"Against Everton we didn't play so well in the second half, and at Wigan we didn't perform and were beaten by a better team on the night.

"That happens. It happened with Aston Villa the night before and I'm sure they are sore and hurting about it.

"These things happen in football, and that's what makes it such a great game, and at times such a cruel game."

While the Scotsman is aware of the criticism, he feels that comes with the territory and says the reaction over the last few days has not come as a surprise to him.

"That's the way it is on Tyneside. Looking from afar, and now being involved directly, there has to be more to it than just being unlucky for over 40 years," he went on.

"Maybe teams haven't been good enough over 40 years, or maybe we just over-react to everything.

"That puts pressure on everybody. That puts pressure on the people who have to make the important decisions, but as anyone will tell you, the secret of any successful football club is continuity.

"My take on it is that at this club, along with maybe one or two other clubs in the UK, you are only two games away from the situation I find myself in.

"That is the nature of it here on Tyneside. I knew that before I put pen to paper on the contract I have got.

"I know people report the way they feel they have to report here on Tyneside, I think it is quite a unique place and all that is not helpful.

"I'm a big boy and I understand how the game works.

"At the end of the day it will be the same when I leave here, it will be the same for the next person. That's the price on the ticket.

"If you are manager of Newcastle United you have to learn to live with that.

Fair do's. If he doesn't feel it's right for him to walk away then it's down to Shepherd to do his job and make decisions. Can't argue with him not wanting to resign if he still thinks he can put things right.

For years I've laboured under the illusion that's what horses looked like, Google Image Search came as a bit of a shock!

So if that's a horse what do porn stars look like?

Why walk away when you can get fired and have your contract paid up?

Spot on I'm afraid. Souness also doesn't want to be seen as someone who quits when the going is tough.

It's time for Fred to do his job, and kick him out.

The level of contradictions that come from Souness when it suits him is unbelievable.

"You're always 2 games from the sack" After 3 european finishes Robson was sacked VERY early last time around. Souness came in and said he had to clean the place out. Now he's got the cheek to say WE overreact.

When asked if he was considering leaving the job, he added: "I'll make it clear for everyone, that can never happen for a number of reasons.

"Because long after football, I have to look at myself in the mirror."

 That is the funniest thing I've ever read. What happened at Rangers, Liverpool, Southampton and Blackburn? He wasn't quite pushed from those jobs.

I'll admit I don't know what happened at Galatassary, Benfica or Torino but as far as I'm aware he's never actually been sacked.

What he meant to say was "I get a shitload when I'm sacked".

What a depressing state of affairs.

Even in the old days under McKeag, Westwood etc I've never felt so pissed off as now, at least then we sold our best players and knew it

We should have known. I wonder if he can give George Weah a ring again and sign some "proper" players to pull us out the shit.

The more I think of that scenario the more i cringe :icon_lol:

I think what I find frustrating about the present situation over those times you mention LM is that in those days we were shit in the management/coaching payroll AND the playing payroll.

The current 1st 11 are on their day, and with decent coaching capable of beating most teams in this division with ease. Crap management combined with the unforgivable decision to dispense with the depth of the squad has made us shambolic!

Get him out but make sure all his cronies go with him!
