They have a sign on the front that spells out that, in the long run, the machine will pay out 80% (or whatever) of what you put into it. Used to play them a fair bit, especially when I was working in the bars. When I was working behind the bar at the local pub, you'd see lads come along and pop about a tenner into it without getting anything back. If you wandered over, popped in £3 and got nowt back you walk away, but it'd usually return about a fiver off the first quid. A fair few times you'd see the name of the game flash, which normally indicates no matter what you do it'll pay out the jackpot, the lad at the machine would get to £10 and take the tenner and walk away (which is fair enough I guess). Having said that, I'm no gambler having lost a months wages in a fruit machine when I was 16. The amount of photos/stories of him stripping/necking thousand quid bottles of champers, blowing money in the casino kind of makes that clear! Also - a months wages? how did you manage that?!? I feel bad enough when i lose 20/30 quid one the poker nights we have round here!! It was "only" about £200 cause I was still at school (weekend job).
