Said I wasn't arsed about the "football rich list" or whatever it was you mentioned. I felt it didn't stick to the thread title and was in danger of derailing things. So I just ignored it.

Preben Arentoft=good lad. Please keep it on track.

it was in response to your stupid comment about "trophy players" which had fuck all whatsoever to do with the thread.

Obsessed, as well as dumb.

Do you know first-hand that he's selling his stuff LM? If he is, and it's know what he has to sell, I've been given the details of someone at the club who will investigate to see if they could buy them and display them.

Club were asked if they would like to buy them and disply in the club room, check out their response in the "follow up" article today.

If the owners had a decent bone in their body they'd buy the stuff and hoy it in the club museum or donate it to the National Football Museum. They won't though...

Read the follow up asticle about Benny Arentoft in tomorrow's Evening Chronicle and see how the arseholes at the Club responded.

From today's Chronicle:

NEWCASTLE United fans have been left disappointed after the club declined to buy Fairs Cup favourite Benny Arentoft’s prized memorabilia.

The Chronicle revealed how Benny, who scored one of Newcastle United’s goals in the win over Hungarian giants Ujpest Dosza in the 1969 Inter Cities Fairs Cup, has made the sad decision to sell his European memories to cover crippling taxes in his native Denmark.

He says he has thought “long and hard” over his plan to sell off the shirt he wore in the game so many black and white fans remember.

He is also selling his miniature replica Fairs Cup he was given after the victory as well as other memorabilia he has treasured over his football playing career.

Fans say they were saddened to hear the news but understand Benny’s decision to put his keepsakes up for auction.

And they feel the memorabilia relating to the last time the team brought home the silverware back to St James’ Park should be bought by the club and kept on Tyneside.

But Newcastle United bosses told the Chronicle they will not be putting in a bid for the items.

A Newcastle United spokesman said: “We’re extremely saddened to hear of Benny’s predicament but in this instance we’re very sorry that we are not able to assist in the purchase of any of his memorabilia as the club already has a good number of items from the Fairs Cup winning era.”

However, the decision has saddened Magpies fans.

Bill Gibbs, 60, of Wallsend, North Tyneside, who helped set up the Fairs Cup Club to remember the last occasion the Magpies brought home a trophy, said: “This is ridiculous. The Fairs Cup was the last time the club won anything significant and the boys from that era should be respected.

“The club should be buying the items off Benny, giving him a good price and keeping the memorabilia on Tyneside. It is our heritage and it would help Benny out at the same time.”

Jim Vaughan, 63, of Cramlington, vice chairman of the Fairs Cup Club, said: “The late Sixties players were paid better than us in those days but not like the modern-day footballers. They have had to plan their retirement and make pension plans to get through.

“It makes me furious that the club won’t step forward and buy the items from Benny. It’s sad but I’m not surprised.”

Toon Talk football fanzine editor Steve Wraith, said: “The Fairs Cup was the last significant trophy that we won and Benny Arentoft was a fabulous player. His memorabilia needs to stay in the North East and what better way than to have it included in a museum.

“There is a big exhibition of Newcastle memorabilia at the Discovery Museum soon and the shirts on display are owned by private individuals.

“It is something that Newcastle United should consider and buy more items for a museum for the fans.”

From his home in Copenhagen, Benny, 68, said: “It would have been nice if the club bought my things but it will warm my heart to think some fans will get pleasure from them when they go up for auction.

“The taxes are so high in Denmark that I am selling these to help with living costs.”

Benny’s items are being sold off at Lord’s Cricket Ground by sports specialists Convery Auctions on May 28.
