I think De Jong was always getting his number of choice tbh & rightly so - when Colo finally gets his dream move to San Lorenzo, Siem will be captain.

A team with Simpson, Williamson, Jonas and Ameobi as first choice good enough for top 5/6, are you serious? Not to mention getting a maximum of half a season out of Ben Arfa (even in his best spell).

Adequate to stay up for plenty off here at the start of each season. Adequate for anything other than what was achieved for the rest.

You were quite pro Pardew for a lot of that, probably too much. Now you seem to have swung too far in the other direction.

Weird then that the team I suggested got 5th.

Pardew knew the tune he'd be made to dance to. He's an average manager, but he is a cunt.

On a point of order we wouldn't have finished fifth without Cisse's arrival.

Who knows? Did Ba stop scoring because he was pushed wide?

The point is, Patfew had an adequate squad to achieve 5th, and definitely a squad capAble of winning a cup.

Blame the manager when things go wrong, but give him no credit when we perform. Nice.

Man-u, Man-c, Chelsea, Arsenal, Liverpool, Tottenham all had infinitely better squads.

And 2 of those had shocking seasons by their standards.

Pardew is an average manager who benefited from a perfect storm.

He deserves credit for that, very few managers are average Premier League standard.

Any talent he has is both stymied and exaggerated by the players he's had at his disposal (few if any of the stars being his choice).

Cabaye, Ben Arfa, Ba, Remy, Debuchy, Colo. are all better players than Pardew is a manager. Taylor, Williamson, Perch and players like Gouffran are his level.

Could he get a team of the latter type established in the premier league? Possibly. Could he consistently get a team of the former into Europe? Not a chance.

Pardew overachieved in 2011/12, underachieved in 2012/13 and we were about where we should've been in 2013/14.

Average manager. Not as bad as people make him out to be, but still a cunt.

taking his number 10 off him isn't progress though that's deliberate disrespect, they're giving him a number because they can't force him out and he is still better than anything we've got  just daft.

as well as dicking every fucker over who has bought a shirt with his name/number on the back at some point tbh

Your making far too big a deal of it to be fair. He's fallen well down the pecking order and to be honest with the noises over the summer it looked like he wouldn't even be given a number.

Yes the situation itself hasn't been managed well but it's Pardew and he's infamous for his man-management ineptitude.

Ben Arfa is in limbo but the fact he's in the squad suggests there's scope for him to work hard and get back in the picture but I doubt that will happen as at this point in time all he wants is to fuck off somewhere else and I don't blame him really with the way things have degenerated for him over the past year.

Not according to this at the end of last month. Though dark colours are supposed to be slimming.

Cheers

Deffo slimmer than 11 year old David Mitchell. Bit to go before he weighs less than 12 year old Tilda Swinton.

You list some good player, but he's only ever had 11 "purple" players and some of them were questionable (Simpson). Most of the top 6 teams have 15-20 high earners.

So he should definitely get a lot more credit than people give him. It's a long season, so the outcome is no fluke.

Average median is fair assessment, if you accept we can't attract an elite manager. I'd possibly put him at the middle-to-higher end of average 6-10th
