Senegal coach Amara Traore has been explaining why United striker Demba Ba failed to appear in their latest international:

“When Demba arrived on Thursday evening for the first training session, it was felt that the ground was really hard for him, and with his knee problem we preferred not to take a risk.

“At the beginning of the season he played on a synthetic ground and he had problems afterwards. For the Mauritius match I would have liked to make him play because it has been a long time since he played for Senegal.

“But with the state of the ground it would have been making him take too much of a risk.”

Nice for an international coach realising that a player shouldnt be risked and potentially crocked for his club in a match that doesnt really matter.

Almost unheard of! Usually they run them into the ground not giving a shit as the club and its fans will suffer the consequences, top guy for doing this.

A rarity these days.

As we signed Ba on a 3 year contract then hes going to be in that whole dodgy two years left position come the summer. The ideal time for the club to sell and realise a good profit rather than take a chance on him seeing out another year and potentially going on another free elsewhere.

Have we ever had a new forward make such a dramatic start?

The free kick was the icing on the cake for me. He just knew he was going to score.

If we paid 15 mill for this guy we'd still think he was a steal.

Great player.

He's better than Bent who went for £18m rising to £24m and Ireland (who must have still been rated at about £4m at the time).

£15m would definitely have been a steal, £20m still would have been.

What about compared to Newcastle strikers such as Shearer, McDonald etc?

Have we ever had someone whose start has been so prolific.

Andy Cole maybe???

Shearer and Cole's starts were both in 'great' Newcastle teams as well if you recall. Sherarer more so than Cole perhaps in that more money had been lavished, but Cole's team still finished 3rd. Ba's tally has come in a team and under manager regarded as little more than shit by many on here.

For the record he's not in anywhere like the same class as Shearer, but then neither has any striker been since the Prem began, and that wasn't the question anyway.

Nobody got any stats on this?

14 in 17 must be in with a shout, surely.

Think it's 21 in 28 starts if you include his West Ham stats which is the most prolific strike rate in the premier league apparently.
