Sylvain Marveaux

And there are many such leagues, and none is better than any other.

By that I mean that winning one doesn't make the fans feel happier than winning another.

So it doesn't matter how much money we spend, because it doesn't matter which league we're in, as regards happiness.

Completely disagree with this.

Anyway Nick, as you say, not about spending. Let's hope that Ba and Marveaux out perform our previous freebies . They certainly look more promising than Campbell, Kuqi, Pancrate and Gosling.

Well, I'm very optimistic about Ba. A little more cautious about Marveaux.

But as you imply, Up the Toon!

"Up the Toon"? Fucking hell :D

Arsenal spend far more than 10 million every year.

They don't like, although depends if your talking gross (yes they do) or net (no they don't, by a distance).

Their gross spend over the last 20 years (£360Mill) averages at £18Mill per year, the Net averages only £4Mill a year, over the same 20 years (£80Mill total).

20 years ago the world record transfer fee was £8m.

Why not go back to 1950, you can get the average down to a few grand.

Of course 8 mill was worth more 20 years ago than it is today....not sure what the relative worth of 8 mill today would be.....

As long as Newcastle operate in a sensible manner, and don't risk bankruptsy, other clubs can do whatever they want, as far as I'm concerned. But they ought to look at Chelsea supporters - the Chelsea experiment has proved that money doesn't make the fans any happier whatsoever, and the Chelsea fans are beginning to think about why exactly Abramovich bought them - there's only one possible explanation; he didn't feel loved enough, and needed an audience of gratitude. Once that wore off, what is he left with. It's a sad story.

Newcastle and Ashley is a far more uplifting story. Ashley has quietly gone about things to do good for Newcastle United, and he has been extremely strong in that he hasn't let the barrage of hatred derail his quiet operations.

More and more Toon fans are coming round to Mike Ashley, and beginning to respect him - anyone who denies this must be a Freddy-ite.

Not just a case of inflation though. The world record now is more than ten times what it was then. £8m might be worth double if you spend it on petrol, but on strikers It's gone through the roof.

What's arsenals average over 5 years?

Tell you what, why don't I just go back 4 years, is that "pertinent" enough of a period for you? that makes their average a £5 Mill transfer profit per year.

But hey, don't let facts get in the way of the negative hysteria.

I wasn't suggesting it was just a case of inflation though. I was just saying it makes sense to compare like with like, in the interest of balance

Aye, that'll do cheers.

You were way out Nick.

Just been having a look at this lads wiki and the 2009/10 season looks excellent if it was in the Jonas role.

Played 35 Scored 10 Assists 5

This is what obviously alerted Man u, Chelsea and Liverpool.

Obviously last year ruined by this groin injury.

If he doesn't do a Gosling, this could be a fantastic signing going on those stats.

Nice Gamble Ashley, hopefully it comes off.

Bet the Mackems are seething at our early business.

Are you looking for a left foot? His can do everything you could dream of. He can pass, control, dribble, deliver or shoot with surgical precision. Sylvain Marveaux has taken Ligue 1 by surprise in 2009-2010 with his ability to regulate Rennes’ game, and despite his positioning on the left, he certainly was Rennes’ real playmaker throughout the season. He can take free-kicks like
, deliver assists or make the difference by himself relying on a fantastic left-foot. And his ability and elegance when dribbling through an adverse defence is something one rarely sees and thoroughly enjoys…

He relies nearly exclusively on his left foot however, and his right foot and head are of no use in his game. In fact, Marveaux will always look at placing the ball back on his left foot even for a simple pass, and will often lose the opportunity to deliver or build on the momentum he could have gained on his opponent. Also, Marveaux will invariably lose a challenge in the air. He hasn’t got the jumping ability, the timing or the stature for those aerial contests, and he isn’t usually that bothered.

What excellent news to wake upto and hats off to the peeps behind the scenes doing all this.

I know people will tot up the 35 mill, but I wonder if there's been a plan in place to avoid fees leaving more cash for better wages. Ie allowing us to get more better calibre players.

Regardless seems like good news.

Is he any good? :D

Did you do this on porpoise?

NEWCASTLE United have swooped to sign exciting left-winger Sylvain Marveaux from under the noses of Liverpool.

United made their move for the former France under-21 international late last night - clinching a five-year deal for the midfielder at 2am today.

Following on from yesterday’s signing of former West Ham striker Demba Ba, it ensures the St James’ Park revolution continues to gather momentum.

And boss Alan Pardew said it was a “great coup” to sign the 25-year-old, who was out of contract after playing more than 100 games for French top flight side Rennes.

Marveaux has joined as competition for Jonas Gutierrez, who, the Evening Chronicle understands, is not one of the crop of players that Newcastle are looking to move on this summer.

With 16 goals from 102 games, Marveaux is quick and attack-minded and adds more pace to a midfield which will be completely overhauled next season.

Pardew said: “It’s a great coup to have signed Sylvain, who has received interest from a number of other clubs.

“He may not be well known to many of our fans, but he is a real talent and a player we have been keeping an eye on for some time.

“ It’s been a good couple of days for us on the transfer front.”

Marveaux was on the brink of moving to Anfield but the move collapsed amid reports that the player, who missed most of the season with a groin injury, had failed his medical.

He has not played since November after suffering the injury playing for Rennes against Brest.

But Newcastle insiders have rubbished those claims, and the player has strongly denied that there are any long-standing fitness problems.

He said the reports “disgusted” him and he had a very thorough medical at Newcastle which did not flag up any problems.

United found out that the move to Liverpool had broken down late yesterday evening, flying the player to Newcastle to talk terms.

And he agreed to the move in the small hours of today, ensuring more good news in the transfer market.

Marveaux has been tracked by a number of English clubs and was close to joining West Ham last summer – only for Rennes to turn down a £3m bid.

Chelsea and Manchester United have also been linked with the tricky winger.

Marveaux, who is a former team-mate of Sunderland striker Asamoah Gyan, will officially become a Newcastle player when the international transfer window opens on July 1.

Is this Nick-Poland guy serious or is he just a WUM? I don't even think a WUM can be that stupid

I doubt he's a toon fan.

Anyone who says "Up the Toon" sounds like a mole sent from Sky Sports. "Why aye lads, what you think of these latest signings? They sound ever so canny to me, Up The Toon, M'on the Magpies, Big Up the Barcodes"
