Not Wimbledon obviously but Emma Raducanu’s performance throughout the US Open has been incredible. She’s 18 and with very little tournament experience never mind grand slams but to actually win the thing without dropping a set has to put her among the best British sporting performances in recent memory.

Best odds you can get for her winning Sports Personality of the Year now are 1/8  Incredible performance.

Not as short as the odds on Piers Morgan trying to make this about him

Tracy Austin won the US open at 17 in 1979…she also had to beat Chris Evert & Martina Navratilova en route to do so. Austin had been around the tour for a couple of years at that point tbf, but ER didn’t have to beat two of the greatest players of all time at around the peak of their powers in order to win on Saturday, she didn’t beat any player inside the current top ten :cuppa:

Having said that, the notoriously straight talking and hard to please Navratilova was in raptures about ER..

Austin was only 16 when she won the US Open / her first major I think. There’s more depth in the women’s game now though. It also feels like there’s a changing of the guard with some of the players Raducanu beat, especially Fernandez, being ranked a lot lower going into the tournament than where they’ll be in 12 months time. Austin won more grand slams and got to world number one before burnout / early retirement (I think she was like 13 or 14 when she was on the professional tour, which wouldn’t be allowed now). With Raducanu winning as a qualifier (never done before) and not dropping a single set in the whole tournament (ditto, if you count the qualifying rounds) it’s at least the equal of Austin’s first win I reckon. Especially given the former’s complete lack of experience
