A statement from Newcastle United Managing Director Derek Llambias

Now that the transfer window has closed, we have had some time to reflect on the business we have conducted over the summer.

Our aim was to secure young players who represented value for money and could add real strength to the squad. The majority of our transfer dealings were completed in the early part of the window and we feel we have signed some players of exceptional quality. Yohan Cabaye, Sylvain Marveaux, Mehdi Abeid, Demba Ba and Gabriel Obertan were all brought in early and we have seen these players settle quickly into the squad and perform well on the pitch.

Earlier this week we were delighted to sign Davide Santon from Inter Milan to fill our left-back position after the departure of Jose Enrique. Davide is an excellent young prospect and we're sure he'll be another superb addition to the squad. We also welcomed young goalkeeper Rob Elliot from Charlton Athletic who will help us retain healthy competition for that position after loaning out Fraser Forster to Celtic.

Of course we had also hoped to secure a further striker in the window, in addition to Demba Ba. Work to bring a striker into the club began early in the summer. Negotiations were complex and protracted and unfortunately it was disappointing that ultimately we could not secure our priority target.

Whilst we did turn our attention to alternative prospects in the latter stages of the window, we have a very clear transfer policy and will not make knee-jerk decisions at the last-minute which are not in the best interests of the club. We understand that supporters will feel frustrated that we did not sign another striker during the window, but it was not for lack of trying that we did not bring our final target in.

We've only seen cabaye doing anything worthwhile so far. The rest have been poor at best.... the ones who have actually played that is.

I wouldn't expect anything more from the FCB and his sidekick. Fucking carpetbaggers.

he forgot to add "but if not for Mike, this fantastic stadium would now be a dog track or a new Tesco, and supporters can be assured our sterling efforts to continue where we left off will be resumed in January"

heh it will be interesting to see who next out the door in january will it be coloccini jonas er either harper or krul or maybe the taylors

Our man Joey Barton tweeted "Cheik Tiote and Tim Krul will be sold as soon as there's a significant bid or they ask for a new deal. Jonas Gutierrez and Fabricio Coloccini will also be off by this time next year."

oh dear, we can't have our players asking for good premiership wages, we'll go bust. Best get rid of them.

He definitely has A LOT of inside information burning in his luggage after the departure, and even if Mike Ashley threatens to use his cockney mafia to break his legs off, he would still have the balls to expose them. GO JOEY.

While i understand that we should not be bringing in a striker as a panic buy to appease us fans. That is NO excuse. They have had since January to find a striker. There should of been at least 5 on a shortlist of which at least one should of signed.

The simple reason why we didnt get a striker in is the same reason we never got Cissokho or Pieters.......Penny pinching.

I am happy with the players we have brought in and feel they will do well. Especially Cabaye, Marveaux and Santon but once again we are left short upfront. They obviously have thought that the strike force that done us last season would suffice this season too, so striker to them a new striker wasnt as important to them as it is to us.

They are doing exactly what they have been doing since they have been here. Gambling.

"Lets make last minute bids that we know wont be accepted to look like we tried when really we can gamble and hope the current crop of strikers will get us by without spending"

This after Chez's post last night makes sense.

Clearly seems to me that he is getting by on the minimum amount of expenditure, gambling on us staying in the PL (which we will) whilst increasing profit and lowering running costs.

From a business point of view it makes sense but on the pitch we arent going to progress as we would like. Unless we get a HUGE slice of luck this year.

Hmmmph B)
