Santon will be the permanent replacement for Simpson. They'll bring a LB like Pieters into the club in Jan. Simpson nearly left in summer, which would have seen Taylor to rb and then santon at lb.

Completely agree. Although I think we shold use Raylor and Santon short term and then Santon and Pieters long term. Simpson has a mountain to climb in my eyes.

Perch came on for Cabayae, Pardews brought him on in midfield a few times. Hard to say whether Taylor should get the chop, I wouldnt but Santon can't be pushing him that hard in training either. And if he was as brilliant as he was before his injury, Santon sure as fuck wouldnt be here.

Pardew surprised me yesterday by giving Sammi his full debut so he's not shy about throwing players in at the deep end. If Santon is on the bench at OT then maybe we can assume that Santon really isn't putting enough pressure on Taylor or Simpson for that matter.

Bottom line is there isnt a specialist left back at the club and our good start has papered over that fuckin ridiculous sitution. If Pardew had been supported properly in the transfer market this summer then where could we be sat this morning?....

I'd certainly want Pieters and (if he's any good at this level) Santon to be our permanent FBs. I'd be happy with that and Ferguson/Simpson/Taylor as decent cover.

Regardless. I can't see Pardew changing things too much unless they (Simpson/Taylor) put in consistently bad performances. He won't drop either any time soon because the defence as a unit has done so well. I hope he'll put emotions and loyalty aside and drop/replace them if/when needed. It's a cruel game sometimes.

Probably in the same place? They are that good, I think they would have won regardless to be honest. Enrique would have struggled somewhat too.

OK, so according to the Sunday Sun we are still after Pieters but it's being hampered by a row with an agent (either way this means we're still after an LB).

And accoridng to Pardew - it's Simpson that Santon is competing with, not Ryan Taylor.

He’s keeping out Davide Santon, who we’ve paid very good money for

Or he was brought in as an LB in the knowledge that he can play either position, but Pardew reckons that Taylor has done so well that he's made the LB spot his own and it's now Simpson that has to start worrying. Especially given the focus of that article is Pardew getting frustrated with Simpson not signing a new deal.

I saw Santon struggle with using his left foot for 70 minutes at Blackburn. The kid looks a trillion times more comfortable on his right foot. He's the very definition of a confidence player and dropping him now would fucking batter him. If we dropped everyone after a shit performance against the best team in the country, we'd get nowhere. So, aye, it's reactionary nonsense. Should we drop Krul as well? Should have done better for their second IYAM.

Reactionary nonsense. Had one poor game in a string of 12 ffs.

Yeah let's keep a crap makeshift left back in the side while Santon finishes his memories of playiing for Newcastle (one page). :)

Santon's 20 year old ffs. Tell you what, we'll throw him in against Nani and Valencia for his first PL game in English football and see how he copes aye? As mental as calling for Ben Arfa to start as soon as his bones were mended.

Exactly. I can't believe people are seriously suggesting we play Santon against Man Utd.

Aye because it's not like he's got experience from handling Ronaldo and keeping him quiet during a champions league game against Man.Utd... HANG ON!

but aye playing against the same club in a different competition makes the world of difference.

You're right its best we keep Taylor or "United" Simpson on so one can be his usual average at best and the other can do his "sideways shuffle" while letting said wingers cross, that's a much better plan.

Quality. :)

That game against Man Utd was 2-3 years ago. Since then his value has plummeted and he had a mediocre spell on loan with Cesena.

He's 20 years old. He's a player with potential, nothing more. I think some people expect him to start games and suddenly be this international class defender.

Thought he was canny slow to react. My overall point was that people wanting to drop Taylor is more to do with a longer held opinion on him coupled with the unknown quantity of Santon on the bench who is rated. Let's not forget people were calling for Marveaux to start on the right despite him being one-dimensional and uncomfortable out there in the games he played wide right. Santon should be the next RB as soon as Simpson's out the team, not the LB. Taylor's been infinitely more solid than Simpson this year IMO (though, I accept that part of that is down to Gutierrez' contributions defensively (which again, brings up the ludicrous notion that some people have had of dropping him)), is more comfortable with the ball at his feet and has scored important goals. Simpson offers nothing but a decent sprinter. Drop Taylor when we get a natural LB but IMO, he's done nowt to warrant getting dropped like. This game wasn't the straw that broke the camel's back ala Williamson's shite run of form that let Steven Taylor back in, just one dodgy game against the best team in the country and the most in-form full back in the league. Evra struggled, Assou-Ekotto struggled, Warnock struggled, Olsson would have struggled. He's not a scapegoat for our loss yesterday.

I've since watched the full 90 minutes btw. Mistakes, aye but fucking hell, Steven Taylor has made worst mistakes in the past year.

Andy Griffin kept Juventus quiet once. Fact is, that settled back line has been a big part of a good start.

Even with Ashley's 'new' vfm transfer policy we shouldve brought a left back and a striker in during the summer. The stories about taking the piss at both ends of the market sum the prick up. We may have nicked a win at QPR or v Arsenal if we'd had a fit motivated striker instead of a clearly out of sorts Ba and a barely fit Shola. We may well have won one of them and be 2 points or possibly more better off this morning. If Taylor had been on the bench yesterday would we have got to half time nowts each? What would have happened then? We'll never know, the result wouldve been probably the same, but the point is that we're not being given the best chance of capitilising on Pardews apparent excellent managerial abilities because he's not being backed properly. Not to have a first choice left footed left back is appalling.

Am sure Pardew wont mind, he knew the deal when he signed up, but for anyone complaining about Ryan Taylor, then the trouble is the lack of depth in the squad and the man at the top is responsible for that.

good for him, santon did that as well, difference being is he made quite a number of appearances doing it, picked up two league medals and a champions league medal along the way (nevermind the coppa italia as well)

There'll be a bedding in period with him though. You're disrupting a backline that's been solid and there's no assurances he's going to hit the ground running. If he does then, fair play, I'll agree it's right to drop him but I think it's far too soon to disrupt the back four because of one defeat.

*chuckles* thats not what .co.uk or pardew said when they signed him.....I like being right.

http://www.nufc.co.uk/articles/20110830/newcastle-sign-davide-santon_2281670_2436667

Newcastle manager Alan Pardew said: "We are delighted to bring to Davide to Newcastle.

"He is a quality left-back and an established international who also gives us flexibility in defence.

"Davide is a young lad and a great signing for us and I am sure he will adapt to the Premier League very quickly."

so either he's a liar, or he's such a bad manager he doesn't know the real position of a player he has purchased.

Whilst we are on about being right... Steven Taylor anyone? Puts his body on the line with a smashed face and he was outstanding yesterday
