I dont listen to as much new music as I should, stuck in the past and all that. Much of this year I've been getting into Band of skulls. The new Primal Scream album is worth a listen. Today though I grabbed this :

Think Kamasi Washington was my favourite from those (that I heard)

Think they've placed Kendrick Lamaar outside the top 10 to be different though. Expect it to top the vast majority of lists.

Courtney Barnett is my favourite of those (possibly of the year) but I've just listened to that Ezra Furman album and I like that a lot on first listen. His voice reminds of o Destroyer and Brakes.

Didn't think much of the Kendrick Lamaar album but then again I didn't really like his last one either.

1. Trembling Bells – The Sovereign Self; amazing Scottish proggy, folky, late 60s/early 70s hippy, trippy genius.

2. Godspeed You! Black Emperor – Asunder, Sweet and Other Distress; astonishing, orchestral avant garde post rock from the Quebecois octet.

3. Band of Holy Joy – The Land of Holy Joy; they’ve been going over 30 years, but this is their finest Brechtian, Klezmer waltz through the capital’s ripped backside in over 25 years.

4. The Pop Group – Citizen Zombie; venerable, reformed post punk iconoclasts rage and howl at the evils of the modern world. Essential.

5. Wire – Wire; nearly 40 years in and the very definition of angular, awkward belligerence on one of their most compelling releases in 30 years

6. Penetration – Resolution; Ferryhill’s finest’s first album since 79 and it contains 5 solid gold classics. Buy this.

7. British Sea Power – Sea of Brass; the world’s cleverest indie band reimagine 14 classics with full orchestral backing. Simply adorable.

8. Euros Childs – Sweetheart; the annual slice of sweet, beautiful pop by the world’s most modest man.

9. Yo La Tengo – Stuff Like That There; quiet, homely acoustic re-treads of some favourites and parts of their back catalogue. Warm.

10. Gang of Four – What Happens Next; Andy Gill is the Gang of One these days, but it’s a fiery soup of righteous anguish and anger he produces.

11. Fairport Convention – Myths & Heroes; a lovely collection of down-to-earth proper folk roots by the incomparable masters of their craft.

12. Jad Fair & Norman Blake – Yes; community service C86 by numbers while we anxiously await the new TFC album.

13. The Fall – Sub Lingual Tablet; elderly drunk rants incoherently over the top of uninspired Killing Joke style sludge.

Metacritic have their list of lists up and running.

Always a good source for what's been missed.  Just obtained The Thermals, Parquet Courts, Thee Oh Sees, Wild Beasts, Nicolas Jaar, Kate Tempest and Yann Tiersen efforts from this year.

I've heard of almost a few of them.

I've listened to one out of one hundred  and obviously that was dark star :D

Missed out on a lot this year music wise, didn't know Swans, Death in Vegas and PJ Harvey had released material. Out of the "new" (to me!) stuff on the list I've heard some of the Savages stuff so may give that a whirl..

I have missed out on quite a bunch from the list. Need to get caught up.

Any list that includes Wilco should just be ignored, fuck they are boring.

A Weird Exit is good but far from the best Thee Oh Sees have released; they are just about to release another album, Odd Entrances, on 2 Dec which from the streams is better than a Weird Exit.

The older I get the more I realise music journos and magazines are generally clueless.

My worst year yet for music.  Think I'm at the dad stage where I need to concentrate on the artists I know I like rather than listening to something new every time i get the chance to put my earphones on.

The Ty Segall album is the only one I've got to know from start to finish.  Only the second of his many albums I've got.  Loved it all.
