ALAN PARDEW wants a Brit-based defender to replace Steven Taylor this January – and Newcastle are weighing up a move for Chris Samba.

Samba’s current asking price of £10m would be too much, but United might hope to exploit uncertainty at Blackburn and take him for nearer £7m.

Samba would certainly be keen on the move and, while it would take a significant outlay from owner Mike Ashley, the Sunday Sun has been told there IS cash to spend on the right player.

The giant 6ft 4in defender certainly has his admirers at St James’ Park and, while it was assumed that United would continue to look overseas for their replacement for Taylor, Pardew is desperate to land a player with top-flight experience.

The Sunday Sun understands United have been offered both Lyon’s Aly Cissokho and Birmingham’s Curtis Davies in recent days.

United wanted Cissokho in the summer, but would not pay Lyon’s asking price and much will depend on whether a package can be put together that appeals.

“It’s a world market but centre-half is a key position and you’ve got to be sure about what you’re getting in that position,” said Pardew.

“It’s a position that gets highlighted in the Premier League – as (Chelsea defender) Luiz is finding out.

“It’s not a case of having to go in and convince (Mike Ashley).

“The last time we met he said: ‘When are you going to get a centre half?’

“He understands the game, perhaps more so than people realise.

“Maybe not on a technical basis but he knows how it works – he knows we need a defender and we’ll try to get one in.

“He’s been excited by the season so far and he’s looking forward to this next period of games.”

United will now be forced to move on to new striker targets after Modibo Maiga’s move fell through after a problem with the medical.

The Mali forward’s representatives insist that he is medically sound, but the Sunday Sun understands there was an issue with a knee injury which caused concern.

A source close to the deal proclaimed it “dead” – and said there was no chance of it being resurrected.

United had already assembled a hit list of targets that includes Luuk de Jong of FC Twente and Lille’s Moussa Sow, who are both keen to move to Tyneside.

The club are keen on Wilfred Zaha of Crystal Palace but a St James’ Park insider described talk of a £10million bid as “pure fantasy”.

Newcastle have sent scouts to watch Palace on several occasions, and would also like Nathaniel Clyne to replace Danny Simpson – if the former Manchester United man can’t agree a new deal.

Would be delighted with any of that lot, less so with Davies. Cissokho is a fullback though isn't he? I mean great if we could get him in plus a CB.

Yeah, pure fantasy I know - in fact I'm worried that the club will now go after a CB instead of a FB because we're operating to such a strict budget. We need both and bringing in a striker is imperative.

Saltwater and Deadman getting it spot on unlike some of the self proclaimed financial whizz-kid geniuses who will still be defending the selling of our best players in 5 more years down the line

Every transfer window brings the speculation as to which one we will sell this time.

Selling tiote is just another example of how short sighted Ashley's policy is. Yes he might turn another tidy profit but another integral player is sold just as the team looks like its starting to gel. It's infuriating.

No point speculating at all on who we get in. It'll no doubt be some foreigner we've never heard of that could potential turn another profit in 18 months time, at the expense of building a successful team.

He is a goner. If not in january, then in the summer. Tiote has been groomed for a while now.

Ashley doesnt even need our team to gel. Just get the 40-odd points for a nice tidy mid-table finish.

He is probably reckoning - strengthen the team and keep your best players - 6th-8th.

Sell for 30-40 mill every year - 12-15th.

Which path do you think he is inclined to choose?

Sorry Big Money. I actually thought about something while making a midnight yorkshire pudding.

Long-term, selling our players for redicilous money can only be a good thing. It lets Mike recuperate his losses and maybe look upon his redheaded stepchild with less anymosity. I do think Mike wants success, he just wants to turn around the ship financially while doing it. And that is the primary concern. Getting this club to turn a profit again. That means buy cheap, and sell expensive. He wants the best players for the least amount of money, both for performance and for resale value. Now, how much of a 25 million Tiote sale would we actually see?

Hard to tell, certainly not all - not even half of it. But it WOULD go back into the club. And if it allows us to buy - say a 3 million midfielder to replace tiote, a 3 million right back and a 4 million pound centre back, would it make us a better side? Not neccessarily, because we dont know if these players would

A, Make it in the Premier league

B, completely offset the weakened side as a result of tiote leaving

but it would provide us with

C, greater depth

I think Mike has a plan of creating a team of players costing below 7 million, ideally 3-4, where every season you have someone taking the step up and turning into a 10-15 million player.

Mike wants success HIS way, WHILE earning money, and WHILE reducing the debt.

Long-term I think he is hoping for a debt-free club, turning a profit which allows for 2-3 new purchases every year, where he can pocket the sales profits from star players, all while promoting SD through the club.

He does benefit from the club being successful though, so its fair to say he wants us to do well and will do everything he can within the frameworks of his business plan to make us achieve that. Which unfortunately does not prevent us from selling our best, and does cap us in regards to how much we pay for players, but still.

Could work.

Manchester United head the queue to buy 25-year-old Newcastle midfielder Cheick Tiote next summer.

Full story: Daily Mirror

Same paper who exclusively revealed that he's already sealed a move to Chelsea.

Whether we'll keep him or not this transfer window is a mystery but we know fuck all who might be trying to sign him, as do the papers.

The football journalist's rule of thumb is to create 100 transfer rumours. If one comes off then smugly state that they were the first paper to break the story.

If they applied the same evidence requirement to the rest of the paper they'd be shut down within a week.

Out of the big four, Tiote would probably be the least painful to lose for me.

4th Tiote

3rd Coloccini

2nd Cabaye

1st Krul

Seriously?

Harper is adequate, Tiote is better than Cabaye. How you placed Cabaye or anyone above Coloccini is beyond me. Colo is so good that he makes the likes of Perch and Taylor look better than they really are.

Its a very fine line tbh. Each to their own.
