Renton 17702 Posted March 10, 2012 Share Posted March 10, 2012 To Mongbird: The Tranmere match co-incidided with a non-advertised one minutes silence to both young Jamie Bulger and Bobby Moore who both passed away in the week leading up to the game. In those days days pre-match one minutes silences weren't so common place. Simple fact was, a few Mags coming through the turnstiles and presumably full of beer, had no idea that a minutes silence was in affect. Thats it, basically. I'll never forget the back page of the Mirror showing a pic of Mags celebrating a goal with the headline 'scum' as if this was the the same supporters actions in the one minutes silence. Wankers of the highest order, our national press. It showed the club for what they are though...even now rotten to the core. I think your brain must be rotten to the core, mate. A couple of lads came into the ground not knowing there was a minutes silence. That's it. It's not the fucking Krypton Factor, mackem. Was this the Tranmere 0 NUFC 3 match in our promotion season? Think Lee and Kelly scored? Fucking hell, that was one of my first away matches. This is the first I have heard of this! So yeah, I must have been blissfully ignorant there was a minute's silence; not sure about being rotten to the core though. It was just a normal away game with a fucking great atmosphere ffs. As has been mentioned, the Gremlin thread on the SMB says it all for me. Utterly pathetic man. Mongbird, I challenge you to find an equally vile thread on a Newcastle messageboard (skunkers excepted). It's the blatent hypocrisy and lack of self awareness I can't get my head round. Your equivalent of N-O? If not, what is? The two clubs represent two different cities, so comparisons are inevitable and part of the rivalry - probably the reason it is so bitter, especially on your side. The 'post something shit on wearside' is just banter, and good banter at that, as was the spin off Stokoe photoshop thread which so mortally offended mackems too thick to understand the pisstake was about a staue, not the man. This is what football rivalry should be about. The fact you can't tell the difference underlines Gene's point. If you were more honest or self aware this would be clear to you. Although, as Gene says you're talking about events more than 20 years ago. I doubt the fella who assault Steve Harper last season had even been born. I'd more focus on his assessment of us back then being completely wide of the mark tbh. Like I said, the day Bobby Moore died, we played and impeccably observed a minute's silence beforehand. I was there and can vouch first hand. The Tranmere game he refers too has to be the one that was on the telly that we won 3-0. I don't remember the minute's silence, let alone any problems..... 12 months later we visited Anfield on the 5th anniversary of Hillsborough. Those of us old enough to remember were absolutely disgusted by what happened to James Bulger and I think it's fair to say anyone who did fail to honour him would have been given a mouthful by those around them. The play-off is well documented and not one of our finest moments. The system was in it's infacy - only the second year it had been in its current format (previously a team from the upper division were involved too) and the previous season, the team who finished 3rd in the league (Crystal Palace) went up. 1989/90 in Division 2 had all been about 3 clubs, Leeds, Sheffield United and Newcastle. The rest had been miles behind and it had been considered that those 3 would go up but that one of them obviously needed the play offs. Sunderland scraped into the playoffs by the skin of their arse and as they were in 6th, played the team who finished 3rd which was us. Having managed a 0-0 at Roker we all expected it to go our way for the return leg and off course we all know what happened. Some simply lost it that night and found it too hard to accept. Like I said not one of our finest moments. The seed of bad bloody that season had been sewn much earlier in the league match at Roker. A train mysteriously broke down on the line to Sunderland and all the football trains were held up for hours. A delayed kick-off was requested and flatly refused by SAFC. Aye, and considering Sunderland were unfairly promoted after losing to the later-disqualified Swindon too, I guess we were punished enough. But anyway, over 20 years ago ffs. I've been thinking a bit about the Tranmere game. I have always and would always respect a minutes silence. So if there was one, I was either unaware of it or simply forgotten about it. I really don't remember there being any deliberate disrespect though and I never have at a Newcastle game home or away. Like I said earlier, I do remember the great atmosphere, the goals, and the 6 inches of urine in the shed they called the bogs though. As it happens I went to Prenton Park a few times that season including afterwards, I never made it secret I was an independent Newcastle fan, and I never had any criticism from the Tranmere lot. Since then the Mackems have interrupted about 3 silences that I know of - I sometimes think that their desprate underlying need to try and be better than us leads them to mirror the bad as well as the good. He describes it just as Howman does so I imagine its "gone down in mackem folklore" since then. Of course one incident 20 years ago which appears to be easily explainable makes us all cunts two decades later. I think mackems have their list of "myths" and mistakenly attribute them to being spread mostly by the fans instead of those who do perpetuate half truths and cliches about us; the mostly mis-informed media, and in particular one or two notable ex players, step forward Mickey Quinn, great player for us but he doesn't half talk fuckin shit. The fact is, according to figures collected over the last decade of PL football, Sunderland fans have been involved in an overwhelming majority (78%) of hedgehog smashing incidents. That means for every 5 hedgehogs that are smashed with a brick, 4 of them have been smashed by Mackems. They took us off at Seaburn and escorted us at a fucking ridiculously slow pace down to the ground despite them knowing the match was well under way. We arrived at just before half time.
