I don’t know where he will be going but we have interested clubs in Germany. “I think he will go to Germany – I don’t know why Newcastle haven’t followed up their interest.” Despite making their first transfer breakthrough last week with the signing of midfielder Romain Amalfitano from Stade Reims, Newcastle do not appear in a hurry to rush through any more major business before the start of Euro 2012 in Poland and Ukraine. Although they are working on deals to try to fill the many vacancies in their development squad for next season, negotiations for senior reinforcements appear to be less advanced with most clubs delaying their business until at least July with a major international tournament ahead. With boss Pardew taking a well-deserved break – he was in Monaco for the Grand Prix over the weekend – and other staff also taking a breather, they are ready to wait for the conclusion of the European Championship to make definitive moves. Indeed, United are still working on their retained list – with the club not yet ready to confirm the departure of stars like Danny Guthrie and Peter Løvenkrands. A formal announcement is now not expected until the back end of this week. Their defensive targets remain largely based on the Continent, with FC Twente’s Brazilian centre-back Douglas another in the frame. As revealed in The Journal last week, there are concerns about the number of agents claiming to represent him and Newcastle would not be able to sign him until August due to issues with him qualifying for Dutch citizenship – but the interest in him is by no means dead. United’s domestic targets are all younger and seen more as potential players for the future. A fresh approach for Sheffield United’s Harry Maguire has not been ruled out and that is more of a possibility after the Blades lost out on promotion through the League One play-offs. Meanwhile, United’s Papiss Cissé has been awarded the prestigious Talents D’Afrique award by French TV station Canal Plus. It is a gong given to the African player who scored the most goals in the major European leagues – a significant achievement on Cissé’s part. The 26-year-old netted nine times in the Bundesliga for Freiburg last season, before hitting 13 goals in his first 14 Premier League appearances after switching to Newcastle in January. Newcastle are not finished there though, and will use their excellent contacts on the continent to strengthen again this summer, with Lille star Debuchy their top target, after club scouts watched the 26-year-old score and impress as France beat Iceland 3-2 on Sunday evening. A powerful and aggressive right-back who can play left-back and in midfield, Debuchy has also been watched by Manchester United and Liverpool in recent months, but Newcastle believe they are favourites, and are preparing a £5 million bid. Lille are said to value the player at closer to £8 million, and are aware that Turkish duo Galatasaray and Fenerbahce are willing to pay that, giving them a strong hand at the negotiating table. Newcastle are likely to be forced into upping their bid though - given that first-choice right-back Danny Simpson has twice rejected the offer of a new contract, and is set to walk out of Sports Direct Arena on a free transfer this summer. The Magpies have Manchester United's Fabio da Silva and Twente's Roberto Rosales as back up options, if they fail to land Debuchy. Didn't know he could play left back as well. NEWCASTLE United have opened negotiations with Crystal Palace over full-back target Nathaniel Clyne. The Journal can reveal that United have contacted their South London counterparts to enquire about the England Under-21 man who is also interesting Manchester United and Ajax. The discussions have not yet progressed to a firm bid for the 21-year-old right-back but, with his contract due to expire in two months, United are ready to formalise their interest. Boss Alan Pardew is a particularly big fan of Clyne and has a good working relationship with bosses at Palace from his time working in London, which may help to sway any battle for the defender’s signature in their favour. With their extended fixture list next year, Newcastle can also offer more guarantees of first team football. Newcastle want to boost their defensive options this summer and the club are intent on signing players who can play in a number of different positions. While Clyne is primarily a right-back – which is Danny Simpson’s position – he can also play on the left of defence, which will help United as they look to fight on four fronts next season. United have also made contact with Coventry over their 18-year-old playmaker Gaël Bigirimana – while Lyon’s Aly Cissokho has reappeared on their radar as a possible target. But the problem with their pursuit of Cissokho is that, while he comes with the ringing endorsement of Newcastle’s scouting team, Pardew and his staff are not quite as sold on the France international. That leaves them looking to Clyne, who is certain to be sold by Palace this summer. With his contract up at the end of July he will be free to move from Selhurst Park but, as he is under 23, the South London side will be due compensation if no fee is agreed. It would be a risk to take the transfer to tribunal, but United would not want to pay anything near the £5million that has been quoted in certain reports. A compromise might suit both clubs, with Palace already having signed a replacement for the Londoner. The Championship club’s co-chairman Steve Parish said: “We have long since resigned ourselves to Nathaniel wanting to go. It is just a matter of talking to those clubs interested in him and agreeing a fee.” It is understood that United’s interest in Clyne is not dependent on Simpson leaving – unlike their potential move for Mathieu Debuchy of Lille. The France defender is interesting Newcastle, but the club will push for a resolution on Simpson’s contract before moving on to sign other senior targets. Newcastle were also offering no comment to the latest reports surrounding Demba Ba, which claimed the much-publicised clause in the striker’s contract is only valid until July 31. As reported by The Journal yesterday, Ba (pictured left) is the most vulnerable of the three United players attracting the most interest from top-flight rivals. Cheick Tioté and Yohan Cabaye both intend to stay, with Newcastle keen to open contract negotiations with the latter around the New Year if he continues to shine. United, meanwhile, have been warned off Coventry’s teenage sensation Bigirimana by Sky Blues boss Andy Thorn – who thinks it would be too soon for him to leave the Ricoh Arena. Bigirimana is contracted until June 2014 but United have reportedly offered £500,000 with a view to adding him to their development squad. Not many sources mentioned, but he supposedly a target to replace Demba Ba, if he where to leave. There is talk about the release clause, obviously, and that Cisse and Demba Ba are not getting along... which I find odd I'm not sure Damen N'Doye will hack it in the premiership.
