You could be right, they're making it up or it could be they're just 30 years behind everyone else? (Probably a bit of both. I felt a lot more safe at Roker park than I did at Ayresome park). :good:

mind you, I'd have to concede jimmy hill's statue quakes in its bronze shoes every time the mackem's stone island crew arrives in town.

As a boro lad, away fans were running a gauntlet at Ayresome Park like. It’s a generally pretty rough part of town, and was full of back alleys.

Housing estate now if you’re interested

aye.

off the top of me head, working your way down and zig zagging across the country....

ayresome park, elland road, maine road (after the moss side riots) old trafford (although I do remember absolutely scattering the cunts who waited for us outside after keeping us prisoner for 3/4 of an hour after the 0-5), the back streets of walton round goodison park, victoria ground at stoke, st andrews and the welcoming committee at new street station, stamford bridge, the walk down seven sisters road to white hart lane, cold blow lane after the 4-0 defeat

oh and I still break out in a cold sweat thinking about the 'friendly' at easter road in edinburgh!

roker park was like a family day out at softlands, despite how according to mackem folklore they're all as hard as fuck!

My first visit to Roker Park was Easter Saturday 1980 when poison dwarf Cummins scored. I remember there were 76 arrests and the copper in charge described it as a "quiet" derby :). I do agree it was pretty easy compared to other places - I think the use of football special trains with strict escorts made it manageable from a policing pov.

I'd add some of the Midlands places like Derby and Leicester to BD's list as always being 5 minutes from being dodgy as fuck.

forgot about filbert street!

first visit to the baseball ground was the keegan (playing days) promotion season. stumbled in to a bar called the vulcan arms, was like apartheid south africa, white folk in one room, black in another. every single person in the pub (newcastle supporters excepted) had their names painted on to their own personal pint glass! all went by without incident though!

think we got beat 3-2.   :(

Like a lot of fans I hate the development of out of town stadiums that are on shopping centres (MKdons) but the old stadiums in the middle of hard core terrace streets were proper dangerous when I look back at it.

Went to Portsmouth in 83/84 and we were pelted with golf balls...Man City all sorts was being chucked over only good thing about Maine Road back then was beer was sold  in the away section🍺:drinks:...Middlesbrough was a bit dicey after the game dodging down back streets to get back to station as well as almost getting crushed when we scored

Don't ever, EVER, let me hear them come out with calling us delewded Jordees again. From Philadelphia to Barcelona, millions and millions follow their progress and it's all down to Sunderland till I die. Gerrin!!! (FTM).

Papa New Guinea.

I've heard Papa John is a big fan too.

How the FUCK would anyone know if they're massive in China and Papua New Guinea.

Also sympathy at their pathetic plight does not equal support.

Midweek in the League cup @ Ayresome 92(?) is the diciest game I’ve been at…including 3 trips to Roker in the 12 o’clock kick off era….I watched one of the lord of the rings films where the dwarves enter a dark underworld inhabited by brutally violent orcs… that was a bit like the Boro game…

I fucking love how they regale themselves with completely made up stories about, well, just about everything to do with their support. Their support is good, in terms of its size, given the shit they’ve had to put up with but it’s definitely mostly local.

Their complete inability/refusal to understand that most people who watched STID found them a laughing stock is pretty amazing
