Never let a woman book holiday dates unsupervised.....mines has managed the seemingly unique feat of booking off the most important week of this season and also, almost fuckin unbeleiveably considering there may well be a euro qualifier on the horizon, the first two weeks of next season. So we're off to Paris next week, hoping to do bog standard Paris stuff as she's never been and I haven't since we went with the school. Wondering A. where might be a good place to possibly catch the Chelsea match in central Paris? and B. apart from all the proper touristy stuff is there anything a bit off the beaten track that may be of interest or worth seeing?

I watched the Arsenal game in Cocoran's Irish Pub on the Boulevard de Clichy, it's near the Moulin Rouge, I'm not sure if that counts as central. It was pricy, 7 Euros for a Guinness, but they gave me 2 free pints because some bloke had had to order so many beers to be able to use his credit card and left the rest. It has plenty of screens around the place so you won't get a sore neck, unless there's bother. Have to say I heard the staff were cunts from someone I met, but it was fine while I was there. There will be no Newcastle fans in there, but you can take your wife for a walk around Pigalle after the game. I've just realised while writing this that this is a place you definitely will not want to go. Sorry about that.

Apparently the Latin quarter has some good restaurants and it's not as expensive as the rest of the city. There is a bookshop at the top of the Latin quarter (it's near the Notre Dame) where Ernest Hemingway supposedly visited, and Joyce got Ullyses published there and had a wank or some shit. It's full of books anyway, if you like that sort of thing.

*Edit.

Seeing as you invoked Orwell in the thread title, you might want to look up the district that he lived in during his time there. The building he lived in is probably a KFC now, but it'd be worth a google.

I went there a few months ago with a girlfriend. If you dont book in advance, just forget about the louvre - the waiting line is longer than Lovenkrants dick.

We went to visit a hunting museum if you are into that sort of thing just a few blocks away, called Musee de Chasse I think the name was. Very lovely if you are into wildlife :)

Versailles is in the outskirts of the city but well worth a visit. For me the gardens were the most impressive, lovely sculptures and scenery and you can really imagine how it must have been like strolling down there centuries ago - it really felt like the center of the world.

There is also a big zoo at the natural museum, was a laugh - alot of amusing creatures :)

Whereabouts are you staying? My Mrs is French so we spend a lot of time there. Know quite a few places in the 6th (Latin Quarter) or if you are near the Champs Elysees, The Bowler ( www.thebowler.fr ) will have it on. €5 pints in there all weekend too which might not sound cheap, but is for Paris.

Thanks for the replies folks. We're staying near la place de republique Billy. Am thinking we can get the metro to a bar which may have it on then get a cab back, but am thinking the cabs will be as pricey as everything else in Paris?

and make sure you walk all the way!

while since I went but there was/is a restaurant called "Chartier" on Rue du Faubourg Montmartre (having just googled it) thats worth a visit.

I went first thing in the morning and queued, no problems. Wasn't carrying any bags which made it quicker.

Funny you should say that Fish the Sacre Couer is the only thing I remember about Paris from when we went with the school and I was certainly thinking about going there. Don't know what the area is like now, back then there was loads of artists sat in the street outside doing portraits and caricatures etc. Just borrowed the rough guide to France from a mate and there's so much to see its going to be impossible to see everything so we're going to steer clear of actual museums ( really wanted to see the musee Picasso but its shut they got the builders in) as such and go up and down the Seine in the water taxis and get off where we fancy and just go and wander.

Not sure about that area I'm afraid as the Mrs' family place is in the 6th. There's bound to be an Irish Pub in the area showing it though. Also, I think the €5 pints are only at the weekend in The Bowler.

Have a belting trip by the way, it's a really brilliant city.

I'll be stopping in to watch the match, you can pop round if you want.

Some TTD

Catacombs in Denfert-Rocherau

Matisse at Beaubourg

Montmartre (not sacre-coeur)

See a gig at Nouveau Casino on rue Oberkampf, loads of bars round there, good at night. Or go to the Maroquinerie in the 20th arr, which is off the beaten track. Lots of decent bars round Menilmontant, good area and not part of the 18 arrondissements so....different.

Near Bastille on rue de Lappe there are loads of rum bars which serve your French Carribean rums from Martinique etc. Go and have some tea punch (tay ponch). Don't blame me for whatever happens next.

Steak and Chips at Le Relais de l'entrecote. Go to one on rue marbeuf in the 8th just off the champs élysées. You can't book and there is no menu. Go, queue, get seated, she'll ask you one question, answer how you like your steak. A starter will arrive then the steak and chips, seconds will be served. Ask for the house red, it's cheap and decent. Once over you get a menu for desserts. 25 a head I think, proper Parisien and good fun. Lush food.

Have a walk around the Marais, Place des Vosges etc. The Marais is good on a Sunday as its Jewish, eat Falafel from a take away, go to a gay bar, buy some Dior trousers.

The cafe at the top of the Bobo has fantastic views across Paris. If you want some cheap clubbing with a lot of atmosphere wander around the Latin Quarter...You can find acorss the board Jazz to 80's hi disco. I used to live there as it was cheap.

Cheers all, very grateful.

Whats the Metro like late at night?....is it much the same as the tube in London? ie head down, keep yourself to yourself and its unlikely you'll attract bother/nutters/drunks/muggers etc? Is it safer to take a cab, if so are they as pricey as the rest of Paris?...

Good call on the steak and chips Chez, but Mrs PL is a militant chicken veggie and quite unadventurous. Eating with her can be tricky, especially abroad. We're going to have one slap up meal out as the budget isnt huge but will stretch to one night where we dont it pan et fromage ;)

Jump over the barrier or go through the gate close behind someone. Nobody pays on the Metro.

I went up the Eiffel Tower at night with some American chick and we got the met back at about 11pm. It was fine, pretty quiet, no bother whatsoever. I think that was a Thursday, could be different at the weekend. I went for a walk around Pigalle at 1am and that wasn't so bad either, the only people who attempted to bother you were the scammers who try to get you into a place and then charge you to leave. Just ignore them and they soon move on to the next pedestrian.

Also, ignore Parky about the Met. There were police about at certain stations while I was there, checking for tickets. This was during the day, you could get away without paying at night, but it's 1.20 Euro per trip which is a fair price. It's better to walk unless you need to go a long distance quickly, great sights all around the city.
