Worrying statistic

Recommended Posts

Whilst listening to the game on Sunday, Collyfodders partner in grime, don't know his name, stated that :-

"Newcastle (in their last 21 games when going behind) have never then gone on to win the game."

That's quite shocking.

We've never really been any good at that in all the time I've been following us and that includes when we briefly challenged for the league so thats nowt new tbh. It needs to be addressed though simply because that's what winners do, but as has been said already...the main point is we haven't gone behind as much as we usually do to start with, so thats the main thing.

A habit we need to learn, but not a stat to get alarmed about in and of itself.

There was a brief period under SBR when we were decent at it. Nowt like Man Utd though where you used to feel like scoring first would only upset them.

Aye.

Was gonna say we had some momentum under SBR and that's the only real time I can remember feeling that if we conceded first we weren't automatically out of the game. We didnt even have it under Keegan sadly, and it's practically impossible to win a league title if you can't do that. When we went behind, that was us done. As you say, Man U are the absolute benchmark 1,2, 3 down and they're still in it (to the point where they might even go on to win). The fans know it too...they'll just keep going and going til the last kick of the game. That's why you can't knock their paying top wages. The players are on silly money but they realise what's expected of them to earn that.

I think we've come on leaps and bounds in starting from a position where we think first and foremost about not getting beaten first. It's galvanized us as a team and our fighting spirit has been immense to see. It's what's made watching us so mint recently. The next step is to hopefully add that extra resilience so we still believe even when we're behind .I really hope we can because it's a big factor. You only get it with graft, so the building blocks are there at least....

Nah, I'm glad we've consolidated our losses into a few easy tonkings tbh. Overall, mentally when we've got the prep right we've been very hard to beat. Traditionally we're really quite easy to beat taking account of the 'named' players we've had on our books.

Points earned from Behind...

1 Villa (a)

1 Spurs (h)

1 Man U (a)

1 Mackems (h)

Points dropped from a lead...

3 Liverpool (a)

3 Fulham (a)

2 Wolves (h)

3 Arsenal (a)

Much prefer to hold onto leads than pull back deficits.

I think it's the draw to win conversion that's traditionally let us down. When we've been behind we've sometimes managed to pull it level again but as for going on to win it you can pretty much forget about it. Which is a sad indictment really. Would be a massive one to add to the armoury if we could make it part of our mindset.

Yeah in the season we finished fourth (1st season with Bellamy/Robert) coming back from behind to win was sort of our speciality.

Man City and co will be happy about that, otherwise we could have won the league. :glare:

we came from behind a lot to win for a while under Bobby Robson iirc. We also won almost all of our games after playing a midweek european game in one of those seasons too which is slightly different but drawn from the same sort of school of thought ie roll up the sleeves and show character and determination to win.

This sort of thing is nice when you do it but largely irrelevant when you don't, as its the final score that matters and nothing else, if you are in a high league position you tend not to fall behind so often as take the lead first in games.

Anyway, what sort of sad bastard digs up such stats ? Stan Collymore, or what did he say about it ? ffs. The day anybody takes any notice of that shithouse is the day we should give up.

Didn't we become brief specialists at scoring in the last 20minutes of the game, about then?

and there you have the facts.

How many times did we score first and hold onto the lead I wonder.

19 of the 23 games we took the lead in delivered a win (83%)

also...

4 of the 65 points earned in total were from a losing position (6%)

11 of the 46 points dropped in total were from a leading position (24%)

Not of those worry me. But they could be improved upon.

We have never , in the PL, won away on the last day.

Time to change that

How many of those matches have we genuinely had something to play for?

probably not many. We have won a fair number of home games though, I think.

All Everton have is to finish above Liverpool.
