Amazing really, the NRA's official solution is armed guards at every school. So im assuming any would be killers would head to the local soft play/creche instead. unfortunately theres too many idiots in America to get this legislation changed. Feel sorry for the families who have suffered such hardship and pain when any attempt to prevent it happening again is being blocked by knackers

exactly, i saw this show and the one the next day and one of the guest said just that and something like he hopes he'll do more public speaking.

scary thing is that this guy is a radio show host who has a syndicated show on over 142 stations so he has the ear of a lot of wackos i find that scarier than a ARwhatever bushmaster.

He made one good point about only banning assault rifles though. Most shootings are with handguns

its not about most shootings though its about mass shootings and clip size if you have a gun with 100 bullets ready to fire you are far more dangerous than someone with a gun that will fire between 6 -15 shots before needing to be reloaded.

So it's about there being 11400 gun deaths last year as opposed to 11500 with a couple of mass murders? That's spectacularly missing the point tbh

really? how well do you think banning hand guns will go over? there needs to be more regulation for sure but i think counting on a ban is spectacularly naive, it will never happen.

i think banning types of oversized clips for the guns is more likely as well as more stringent regulation on access, ie not being able to go and buy a hand-gun over the counter on a whim.

Breaking news on the Beeb: been another shooting at a school today, this time in California - only two confirmed injured so far. I'm sure it'll prompt even more gun sales by the logically-challenged of America.

Again though, how many of the gun deaths in America were due to people walking into a shop and buying a gun? They normally just pick 3 or 4 out of their gun cabinet

banning guns will never happen in the states, its in the constitution. more stringent regulation of types of guns/accessories available will happen, to what degree remains to be seen.

Where did they get the guns for their gun cabinets though? The worrying thing is that there are far too many right wing nutcases with significant arsenals at their disposal. They're clinging to a constitution that has a severely outdated standpoint on gun ownership that needs to be amended. I saw a video on youtube a while back that summed your typical American gun owner - some guy had lost a bet with his mates that their team wouldn't make the playoffs (or something) and so they carted his widescreen telly out into the back yard and pumped several clips into it from various shotguns and assault rifles.

You can't just implement a ban though - the prohibition era just goes to show that outright banning doesn't work in America.

Best course of action would be to severely restrict the sale of weapons to civilians. Background checks, licenses that have to be renewed subject to strict criteria. Perhaps then it'd be possible to drastically reduce gun-related deaths over time.

US gun debate: Obama unveils gun control proposals

President Barack Obama has unveiled sweeping gun control proposals, setting the stage for a showdown with firearms rights advocates.

Mr Obama called for a ban on assault weapons and high-capacity magazines and wider background checks on gun buyers.

The Democratic president also signed 23 executive-order measures, which do not require congressional approval.

Obama aides said earlier the nation's conscience had been seared by last month's school massacre in Connecticut.

Mr Obama unveiled the new proposals at the White House on Wednesday morning, flanked by children who wrote him letters after the Newtown school shooting, which left 26 dead.

'Tough battle'

During the press conference, the president urged Congress:

  • to ban "military-style" assault weapons such as those used in several recent mass shootings
  • impose limits on ammunition magazines to 10 rounds
  • introduce background checks on all gun sales; currently private sales and some sales at gun shows are exempt
  • pass a ban on possession and sale of armour-piercing bullets
  • introduce new gun-trafficking laws
  • Finally approve the appointment of the head of the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives
  • Mr Obama added he would sign a directive so that government agencies can conduct research into gun crime

Among the unilateral steps Mr Obama pledged to take was to end a ban on gun-violence research by a prominent federal agency.

Mr Obama acknowledged his legislative push would encounter stiff opposition in Congress.

"This will be difficult," he said. "I will put everything I've got into this."

Even before his second term begins, Barack Obama is about to throw down a big gauntlet. No-one expected gun control to be so high on his list of priorities, but the killings at Newtown seem to have changed everything.

The president knows he faces a daunting challenge - there's little appetite in Congress for major gun control legislation. But Mr Obama seems determined to try to shame Congress into action. He'll be surrounded by children when he unveils his plans, a device that could prove as controversial as the measures themselves.

He may cite the example of New York state - which has just passed one of the toughest gun ownership laws in the country - as evidence that changes can be made to the law. But opponents of new legislation are mobilising and gun sales have soared since Newtown. For the first time in almost 20 years, the stage is set for a bitter fight over America's gun laws.

The new proposals are the result of meetings between a task force led by Vice-President Joe Biden and groups from across the political spectrum, White House aides said.

Mr Biden met gun control and firearms rights advocates, entertainment and video game industry figures, parents of shooting victims and law enforcement officials.

The task force also consulted the nation's top gun lobby, the National Rifle Association (NRA), which has repeatedly vowed to fight any attempts to limit access to guns or ammunition.

In the days after the Newtown shooting, the NRA proposed stationing armed guards in every school in America. The group says it has signed up more than 100,000 members since the massacre.

'Repugnant and cowardly'

On Wednesday, the NRA released a web advert attacking the president as "an elitist hypocrite" because his daughters are protected by armed guards at their school in Washington DC. But the ad accused him of opposing armed guards in every school and favours "gun-free" school zones.

The White House condemned the ad as "repugnant and cowardly".

On Wednesday, Mr Obama proposed freeing up law enforcement funds for schools to hire 1,000 new armed police, school psychologists, social workers or other staff trained to prevent violence.

On Tuesday, New York state comfortably passed the first gun control law since December's school shooting in Newtown. Supporters said the state's firearms restrictions were now the tightest in the nation.

Those measures include a wider ban on assault weapons, a law limiting high-capacity ammunition magazines, and provisions to keep guns from mentally ill people who make threats.

Some gun owners will also have to register them with authorities.

Looks like he means business this time. Going to be an interesting battle with Congress.
