The people who were gullible enough to swallow the showcasing line are probably the same people who are buying into this crap about stability. For a club that has had six managers in five years to start preaching about stability reeks of hypocrisy, yet another worthless soundbites in a long string of worthless soundbites.

 

Finishing fifth was as good as it is going to get. It can only go downhill from here and long before Pardew's contract is up the club's lack of ambition will require a scapegoat.

Yes we are sort of stable at the moment but DL was claiming giving Pardew an absurdly long contract was a basis for stability, which is nonsense. Managers only stay at club a long time if their team is meeting expectations, if it's not they go.

The stability DL refers to at Manchester United and Arsenal isn't the result of giving the respective managers long contracts, its a result of Ferguson and Wenger earning contract extensions. The act of handing a manager an eight year contract doesn't guarantee they will deliver acceptable results for eight years, nor does it guarantee the club won't sack him if the team starts to struggle.

Before DL rescued him from the managerial scrapheap Pardew managed 4 years at Reading. 3 years at West Ham. 2 years at Charlton. 1 year at Southampton. It's not a record that suggests he'll see out an eight year contract.

An 8 year contract will equal a hefty bit of compensation should another club poach Pardew.

I get not being held hostage by other clubs- but we needed to push forward and if we had to swallow 4-6 million extra to get the players we needed in it would have been worth it. Not asking for 10 million pound signings, just if someone is asking 7 and you are offering 5.5 there has to be a resolution in the middle. Fact is we MADE money off this transfer window, and for a club looking to push on that's some bullshit

 

Anyway- he's right about getting into Europe too soon. I've been saying it all along- we are going to get screwed because of it like so many clubs before (this comes down to the investment)

The fact that the manager and coaches have signed new 8 years deals , proves the long term plans that this club has. We have been a club that has went through managers willy nilly to try and quick fix things and it never works.

 

Once you have a decent manager and coaching staff, it's best to allow them to see through a long term plan to the hilt which gives us a stable set up of players that are fully known to them, which includes the youngsters coming through, because that's when you gain the extra yard on other teams who are still in the process of changing staff at the drop of a hat.

 

Man Utd and Arsenal are proof that once you get a good manager in, you allow them the time to put everything in place from top to bottom and you reap the benefit of it.

 

Clubs with weak owners, usually end up with weak teams in the long run...and by weak owners, I mean owners that sack managers for one seasons of mediocrity or because the fans don't like them.

 

We aren't the finished article by a long shot but we are on the right road, yet it's gonna take time and patience to fit the full jigsaw together for a serious assault on the major honours.

 

It's all about the dedication of all involved at the club and in the main we have that from all just about.

Just handing out long contracts to the manager and staff are no guarantees of anything though if we're not investing in players.

 

This window was a step backwards and we're all seeing the result. Players and teams are fickle and it takes a very short time for what seemed like a solid side to unravel and turn into relegation material.

 

Heads can go down, a key player can get tempted away, squabbles can start in the dressing room and the manager can lose confidence.

 

We're obviously not there yet but we have been in the not too distant past and I hope MA realises this. Investment in the side isn't an option, it's a necessity.

 

We're much more careful about how we spend money now and that's a huge reason why we're not leaking money while still being average but to not see that we needed to just get bodies in this summer is ignorant and we could well end up spending more than we would have done just to get back to where we were.

Good post. I can only assume they thought it was worth the risk - but we're already suffering from it now we're missing players.

 

And I can't put into words how important Colo is to us. Without him we're not the same. I'd have loved for the club to have brought in another top class CB to partner Steven Taylor.

 

 

Debuchy+Douglas, a couple of managerial tweaks, and getting Cisse and Ba to score together (in a 433 formation that just doesn't seem possible sadly... maybe we could try 4-3-1-2 with someone floating around behind the strikers?) and we'd be much better off iyam. On paper that wasn't/isn't a massive ask.

 

Have found the reserve players breaking through to be pretty inconsistent too, such as Vuckic and Tav. On the other hand we haven't seen anything of Sammy Ameobi and Abeid yet and they're meant to be two of our best young players.
