The most depressing thing about this match was the in-fighting among the toon "fans" . There were 50+ yo geezers who should know better fronting up and giving it "see you next time" verbals and then about 15 mns from the end there was a lad who was got in a headlock on the stairs above the centre line in the E Stand surrounded by about 6 other guys, at least one of whom was holding on with one hand while throwing close body punches with the other for what seemed like ages - I'm not talking handbags here. Took the stewards ages to wake up to it. I thought it was bad enough when I thought they were picking on a Manure imposter but was told afterwards it was a toon fan domestic. FFS.

Today was actually an argument against technology though... Officials made a call, which was proved right.

Where and how was it proved right?

Aye, it wasn't proved right at all. The "you couldn't give that as a goal" line from the commentators was correct - the linesman would have been guessing, but he was also guessing that it wasn't a goal; the margins were too small for him to have been doing anything but. The replays and freeze frames showed that he probably just about guessed right, but they also confirmed that he got there 100% by guesswork because even with the benefit of a freeze frame there were only centimetres in it.

Bring in the technology and we can stop the guesswork. If anything it was a great example of why the technology is needed.

if its a beam across the goal, how do you stop players from triggering it?...video has proved inconclusive, but the alternative looks like it could have problems. I take it the best way is a hawkeye systtem which involves stopping play, which just will not work in football becuase if its not a goal, play goes on...

They're not gonna use a beam that's triggered by ANYTHING that crosses it. There'll be something in the ball if they go down that route, or it'll be hawkeye.

They have actually trialled some stuff havent they?......cant see it being hawkeye, you're changing one of the fundamentals of the game if you stop play for every goaline decision iyam.

There won't be, but if there WAS a system whereby players triggered the beam, I guarantee Allardyce would have a designated beambreaker for all set plays, to ensure that all of his goal line chances get referred. Ever one for playing the percentages, that fat twat.

Don't get cricket/tennis Hawkeye in your head, Hawkeye can and does work in real time and, in the case of football, wouldn't involve stopping play unless the ball did cross the line.

You would just let play continue for the 10-15 seconds or so that it took Captain Hawkeye up in his office to review the decision. He then radios the ref and says that was a goal and the whistle blows.

heres the spiel on the two systems...cant see sky being happy with the second one which works better....and all this has come from them....

Yeah but anything couldve happened in that period!...red cards, penalty awards....what do you do about them?..

It might not in football...see the link...

Unlikely in 10 seconds, but play stopped when the ball crossed the line, so they're overruled.

I remember you carrying on like this last time we had this discussion. In practice, an incident like this comes up probably less than once a game. It's not like we would be turning it into American football with constant breaks in play. And it's highly unlikely that there'd be penalties or red cards in the interim.

My mistake not realtime, less than a second is far too long.

Don't see it saying that play would need to be stopped mind you which was pretty much my point.

Anyway, read your own article, Hawkeye takes less than a second the way they've proposed it.

It also says that youve got to be able to see 25% of the ball which, if theres bodies actually on the line, may make it as good a yesterdays video.

The second system seems top be the one...but sky (who are driving this, for all the wrong reasons) wont be happy with that...

No, disagree. However unlikely things seem, they could happen. And if sky do get hawkeye used for this (and I've no reason to hope or beleive that they wont get it driven through) then FIFA might as well finally fuckin pack up and go home. Sky have changed days, dates, timings, finance, audience make up, admission prices, even how long half time is etc etc but they havent been able to change much of what happens during play in a game. This would just put the tin hat on it.

I had a season ticket for years and never once had my make up changed at a game.

As with the last time we had this debate, I fail to understand your opposition to bringing an end to incorrect goal line decisions. We should probably leave it there.

Its simple really, I object to sky changing what actually happens on the pitch during a game, they've changed every fuckin thing else. Surely commercialism should be kept away from how a simple game has been played for over 100 years? Its the thin end of the wedge this like, this is the line in the sand for those fuckers. Dont care about cricket, tennis or any other minority sport they now own. How the game is played on the pitch should be controlled by the officials and how they interpret the laws of the game, not by a commercial operation with their eye on their subscribers and shareholders. I know am largely alone in this, and I know that to some I sound like a luddite. I don't care and obviously you're all entitled to your own opionions on it, but once they get their claws into what happens during the game it won't end there. As I said, at that point FIFA may as well give up having anything to do with the laws of the game and hand control over to a TV company.

I agree with you to an extent but this isn't an interpretation of rules, either the ball crosses the line or it doesn't, theres no grey area.

yes its all for the sake of the rich getting richer but it also trickles down through the club, if teams get relegated and the point or 2 extra could have kept them up that is the people at the bottom of the club losing their jobs, the board members aren't getting sacked to make up for the loss.

Atmosphere was absolutely shite yesterday until we were 0-3 down, nee excuses, too many middle class wanks at the game these days. If people don't want to hear pissed up lairy doilums shouting and swearing take their wives and kids in to the family enclosure.

Also the people in the Leazes making aeroplane gesticulations, fuck off you disgraces to Tyneside.

The game itself we weren't that bad, it wasn't a 0-3, if Cisse's goal had've stood anything could've happened. Santon had a good game, but this 442 pish had to end. It's purely to pacify Demba and Cisse, we're a 433 team, everybody knows it.

It's ridiculous now. Best game of the season, Bordeaux 433. Beat Spurs after switching to 433 too. And we got a point against Villa after switching to 433 as well iirc

Every time we have played 442 we look hopeless. We've played 11 games so far this season. How long is it going to take to click on? It wouldn't be so bad If we didn't finish 5th last season because we played. . . . 433!!!

No action from the FA against Van Persie

fucking crock of shit, tweet gets cole pulled up on misconduct, attacking another player off the ball gets nothing, all hinged on whether webb considered it violent conduct which is itself a fucking ridiculous policy
