Offender Cleared For Job

Updated: 07:05, Sunday January 08, 2006

A registered sex offender was given a job as a teacher after being cleared by the Education Secretary, it has emerged.

Ruth Kelly had decided the man was not a threat and he was employed at a secondary school in Norwich.

He was prevented from starting work only after police found out and protested.

The decision not to ban him was taken after Ms Kelly apparently believed that evidence that he had accessed paedophile websites was inconclusive.

Ms Kelly faces criticism from experts who say politicians should not decide who works with children.

The teacher, who was placed on the sex offenders register without being convicted, was given a job at the Hewett School in Norwich last month.

The school's head, Tom Samain, and governors' chairman, Marion Wright, voiced concern in a joint statement.

"The person concerned is no longer employed, and there will be a full examination of the process in this case," they said.

"We are concerned at the policy contradictions it throws up, and have raised our concerns with the DfES."

Ms Kelly had given him the green light to work in schools the previous May.

The Department for Education wrote to Norfolk County Council saying that she had "considered all aspects of the case, including sex offender registration, and decided that the risks of the teacher being allowed to continue teaching were acceptable".

The department's Safeguarding Children Unit said Ms Kelly did not believe he belonged on list 99, the national list of people barred from working with children.

The police followed strict Home Office guidelines in placing him on the Sex Offenders Register, and are reported to have privately expressed deep reservations about Ms Kelly's decision.

I would love to know the details of this case, instead of a piece that could only incite anger.

Did the fact that she looks like a young boy play any part in her decision?

weird - I mean "inconclusive" evidence - and a PE teacher - I mean if he was a Chemistry teacher or something he wouldn't be in the way of quite so much opportunity ...

But Ruth Kelly is an idiot

Wonder if he'd have got a job there if Ruth Kelly had kids at the school.

I believe the teacher was cautioned for downloading kiddie porn. Surely that makes him completely unsuitable to teach children (particularly PE) end of story.

Agreed, its the hight of arrogance and stupidity on Ruth Kelly's part to have even considered allowing this "teacher" back into a school, she should be sacked.
