I'm relieved there is a deal because the alternative is even worse. But on the other hand the negative effects will now be easier to hide, and masked by covid and the right wing tabloids and BBC to an extent.

What can't be hidden is the tangible negative effects on people. Non-tariff barriers will remain and cost more than tariffs, so some products will increase in price. Trading with the EU will become much more beaurocratic for those which do it, to the tune of 20 billion a year. For the average Joe, holidays in the EU will increase in price (as I have already found out) and travel insurance will rocket without EHIC. Gammon people tend to have most comorbidities so will be hit hardest. Passport queues, loss of pet passports, 'expats" completely fucked. Service industries and finance will be badly affected, as well as some niche industries. Erasmus gone. People will notice these massive negatives individually and collectively now its happening.

And of course we have literally introduced a border down the country and emboldened Scottish nationalism to the extent that independence looks very likely. As a country we are massively economically and culturally diminished. But perhaps this deal leaves the door slightly ajar for future generations. I really hope so.

A lot of banks and other financial services companies have moved EU business to Ireland or other places like Paris or Frankfurt.

As well as direct effects on jobs and assets held, the main "hit" will be in taxes paid elsewhere rather than in the UK. I don't know the figures but I'm guessing it's slightly more than the value of the fucking fishing industry.

The fishing industry shite was always about appeasement of gammons with the old sovereignty of British waters garbage. The whole thing’s been utter madness from start to finish but winning elections has gone from being about white middle-aged, middle class people paying less income tax to the same demographic not having to admit they were wrong. What a fucking country

Looks like Starmer is going to spring the elephant trap today.

I do note that the polls indicate that most people think we should sign the deal even from the Remain camp, so presumably he's making the right call across the nation's mood here.

Elephant trap?  Voting for the deal is trapping who or what? I think abstaining is a better plan tbh..

I do too sorry - I meant he was knowingly walking into it himself.

I'm certain there'll be loads more stuff to come out that will cause fury amongst the Brexiteer ranks. Tough tits, we've all got to live with it now.
