Mike Ashley -- Irrelevant Cunt

Dunno why you're letting him frame the argument in terms of manager anyway......the point raised was about the coaching staff Ashley has allowed hired, irrespective of manager.

He may feel bitten by the Allardyce swarm of hangers on. There's a middle ground to be had though.

Certainly is. I was talking to Alex about that recently saying it doesn't have to be XXL Sam levels of backroom staff as that probably cost him a fortune but just a few more additions like a specialised attacking coach, a set piece coach or something. As you can see those aspects are the weak points of Pardew's coaching and it would be a big positive for us if we had somebody brought in that could help him with that side of things.

He left becasue he was a footballer approaching the last year of his contract and thus held all the cards, it was £££'s plain and simple.

...I don't buy that. He was our best player in the championship season and yet wasn't offered a new contract before his wound down. The club were selling players and not replacing them, nor showing that they intended to replace them. All in all it smacks of incompetence letting his contract run down, further contributing to the degradation of his confidence in the ambition of the owner and the confidence of said owner in his abilities. Deserved an improved lengthy contract, but they missed the boat on that and consequently the best left back we've had in the premier league era is unduly gone.

We did, no details on the particulars of it, and it only came when he had little more than a year to run on his contract.

  • 4 weeks later...

Wonder who he is considering.

The shit manager roulette wheel must be picking up pace.

I dont think there's any reason to suppose a shit manager will be next (if Pardew goes and if we stay up).

The way we've gone about recruiting quality players suggest an aspiration within the club.

I think the last five years of football in general is littered with managers who have become very rich for failure so trying to find the right fit is an absolute nightmare of a job.

Why are you making excuses for Ashley?

He's failed with every appointment he has made.

No excuses allowed for Pardew.

I'm simply saying trying to find a manager that is right for the long term aims of a football club is a nightmare which is why there are so few of them about.

Look at the list of managers who haven't worked at Newcastle over the last 30 years. Then add in the rest of the league, England managers.

It's understandable why its probably the hardest tasks in football.

My cold light of day thoughts are that if it takes another relegation to piss off Ashley enough to want to sell then its "acceptable" - I really don't want it to happen but if it does there should be a positive outcome.

I don't know enough about managers in Spain, Germany etc but surely there must be more like the bloke Southampton got who has improved them and others like Laudrup (not saying Laudrup btw - that ship has sailed).

Thing is with this club a foreign manager would probably be under more pressure than at others which leaves us looking back at "potential" like Clarkey.

When Ashley hired Keegan I didn't think it was the best of decisions but I liked the fact that Ashley seemed to be a romantic. Now a few years later, we know that the truth is far from that, but I naively hope he'll find the romantic inside of him again and hire a Zdenek Zeman type of manager. I seem to become more and more of a football romantic myself as I get older, I've accepted the fact that we'll win fuck all in my lifetime. I just want to see NUFC play good football again.

Aye. Making excuses.

I could "simply say" managing Newcastle is hard, no-one's won owt for 40+ year. It's an empty excuse though. Something you're keen to offer Ashley while berating Pardew for citing legitimate events that have made it hard for him this year.

Not at all, just responding to your flippant "shit manager roulette wheel" post.

I still think the clubs being put on a decent footing overall since relegation and the appointment of Hughton then Pardew has brought some stability. I think it's tough to beat Ashley up because of the way the season has turned out.

There have been mistakes in the summer and their have been injuries, but in no way do they excuse Pardews performance.

None of that has owt to do with Ashley's record appointing managers...which does give reason to suppose that next one will be shit too.

How can you be Pardew's harshest critic, while praising Ashley for his appointment? Your posts are wrapped in circles of ill thought out paradoxical logic.

Because I try to look at the full picture and what causes events.

After Keegan the club fell apart and allowing Hughton to continue on from caretaker was a good move.

There then followed a period where "the Gang of Four " players appeared to be running the dressing room in Ashleys eyes making Hughton look weak as a manager.

For whatever reasons they ended up with Pardew and up until this season you would say that decision was working out for Ashley / Newcastle.

5th place, European football, league manager of the year. Pretty hard to argue Ashleys decision hadn't paid off.

That brings us to this season. You make out like we are the only club who have had injuries or not had the ideal squad. Some blame Europe even though most games were played by kids early doors.

The bottom line is that poor tactics and poor team selection have been the major factors effecting games.

So yes, it's quite reasonable to say Ashley had it right so far and that Pardew has fucked it up.

We all said Pardew a shit manager when he was appointed. He remains as shit.

Ashley is shit at picking managers.

Fingers crossed he appoints a good one this time...and a good one that he can work with.

Maybe Ashley shouldn't have sacked Hughton, then? Unless you think Hughton would be as bad as Pardew with the current crop?

I agree, but 95% were quite happy with that appointment at the end of last season. He has quite literally gone from hero to zero.

Regarding Ashley my point is could you point to anyone who is good at appointing managers? I'm not defending him per sue, I'm just saying its the hardest job in football and the vast majority get it wrong and end up throwing millions down the drain.

That's why it's understandable a gamble would be taken on Pardew rather than Steve Bruce, Martin Oneill, allerdyce, etc etc.

Anyway I hope he has someone working away at it.

I think Hughton was the right man at the right time.

However in any business you will see someone "made up" to cover for a real manager and he will get good results and be everyone's mate. Clearly the Gang of Four were assisting him and hurting him at the same time.

He has probably benefitted from that experience and realises there is a line between being the manager and being a pal etc etc.

I'm sure most of us who've been around the clock a bit have encountered similar.

A lot said he achieved last season wasn't sustainable due to the way he achieved it. Relying on individualism rather than outplaying other teams for a lot of last season for example.
