I think people were expecting people being paid a fortune to play for Newcastle to put in a bit of effort, or are they just allowed to do that in games they fancy?

Shame that the players on the other side aren't also paid a fortune, otherwise your argument would be stupid...

A bit of effort perhaps?

Don't think it was necessarily a lack of effort, I think it was instructions given by the coaching staff due to our fucking awful injury list.

Stop blaming the injury list all of the time man, you sound as bad as Pardew. He's probably happy with it as he can keep on trotting out the same excuse to mask his own inefficiencies. This is the best squad that we've had for a very long time now and Pardew's made a mess of it this season.

QPR and Reading are good as down but other results have screwed us today. A full strength team would have been beaten today let alone a team with one first team defender on the pitch & other injuries.

We're in it but other team have worse runs ins. I don't know why we always roll over at City - that's got to be the worst of them recently.

How could my argument be stupid?

I'm not interested in the opposition, I'm questioning why we shouldn't expect our players to put in some effort and earn their pay.

Money doesn't always win games as we've proved this season and as Brighton proved against us.

If you're arguing that money won the game today then you're talking nonsense.

Do you believe that it was acceptable to accept defeat, from the off, when we need every point we can scrap for?

We're 3 points off a relegation place, how can you so flippantly dismiss such a dreadful performance?

If, if there is any disgrace to losing 4 - 0 to Man. City the bulk of it should be placed on the shoulders of Pardieu for his inept team selection.

Why he started Obertan is beyond me.

Why he started Jonas at left back is beyond me.

Why he started Wilson is beyond me(although I did predict it)

First half was awful, second half was better after changes were made.

Whens he had the squad at his disposal like? 20% of the time?

You don't need to, we aren't stupid.

I have to wonder, realistically which managers would be available if we replaced Pardeau and more importantlu which would be interested.

Fulham and Sunderland are 2 massive games now. Lets not kid ourselves, if we go down nigh on the entire first XI will be jumping ship. We had a lucky escape bouncing back as well as we did from the last relegation. Lose to the Mackems and we could be 3rd bottom in 2 weeks time

The best squad we've had for all of 8 weeks....about as long as Cisse's scoring streak last season ;) Theres no rhyme or reason to this season. Neither was there last season. We're a bog standard inconsistent football team. Changing the manager may help, am not completely against that thought. Pardew's not safe, Hughton will tell you that. I just can't see who'd come and work for Ashley who would be an improvement.

I'm not solely blaming the injuries, but was anybody actually expecting anything but a comfortable win for Man City today? It's irrefutable that we've been fucked by injuries this season. That's Ashley's fault. Could a better manager have got more out of the team that remained? Definitely. Again, that's down to Ashley. However, it's daft to say that Pardew's to shoulder all the blame for an away loss to the reigning champions when you're missing the players we were. He tried gung-ho at Arsenal and Man U with similarly weakened sides and we got absolutely raped in the end. Maybe he thought that those tactics didn't work last time, perhaps setting up to defende and hit them on the break with Obertan and Gouffran would work. It didn't either.

I'm not absolving Pardew of all fault (for example; I'd not have taken Gouffran off unless there was an injury concern) but twitter and here was bound to explode with anger at Pardew and some will even call for his head, because that's what people do.

I'm with Jonny in that we need some extra coaches bringing in - specialists - I'd bet we have one of the smallest back room staffs in the league.

I 'm not reading too much into this result but the league table is looking dangerous.

Well yes, of course.

Are you honestly saying you were expecting us to make it comfortable for them when we're in a relegation scrap?

Southampton didn't make things too comfortable for Chelsea did they?

The other thing to take into consideration is Thursday night. If we win two nowt will Pardew be a genius?.....are Benfica likely to be any better than Spurs this season who we have played ok against twice and beaten once.

No, I'm arguing that money is utterly irrelevant. I don't buy that there was simply a lack of effort. I'd be amazed if they weren't given strict instructions to not leave gaps at the back, to make sure they're positionally secure.

I can "flippantly dismiss" this performance because before the game kicked off I looked at the team we had available and who they'd line up against, I looked at our away form, I looked at their home form, I looked at who was returning for them, Ilooked at what issues we've had this term and I expected a comfortable win for Man City. By the way those baffled the line-up show themselves up, because on the whole he picked what was available. Who other than Simpson at right back? Tyalor, Mbiwa? what and put Williamson or a child in the centre of the defence? Who other than Jonas to play at full back? Anita? a kid? the only arguable position for me was Obertan/Marveaux and I can only assume he wanted to use Obertan's pace.

We were never going to win this game with the respective teams available, the away form we're suffering and one eye on Benfica. Fulham was always going to be the game to focus, then the mackems, West Brom, West Ham, QPR are the places we should be expecting to pick up 3pts.

I'm not going to short circuit because the Four 1st teamers who took to the field against the champions weren't able to get a result or even a good performance. That way madness lies.

Southampton have won three league games since January. We've won four, including beating Southampton. But its lack of effort that loses games, of course. How the opposistion play is irrelevant in this, silly me.

You seem to be a bit mixed up.

I'm saying the effort the opposition puts in isn't of interest to me.

My interest is in ours which, today, was woeful.

@milesstarforth 1m

Krul, Santon and Tiote should be fit for Benfica. Marveaux didn't start because of slight groin problem

So that's why Obertan started

Who would you have started at Left Back?

Who would you have started at right back?
