Aye, sounds amazing. I think, basically, we have nothing in common

vegas can suck you in like that. i honestly had no desire to go there before my first visit.

i should add that it's not all casino floor savagery either. you can have an awesome time there and not gamble at all.

I thought too before I went. My brother talked me into going the first time I visited him and every time I returned to California, I always made it part of the trip.

I thought I would hate it but absolutely loved it. Everything about the place is fucking wrong. It's a cancerous growth of depravity and excess but you can have a serious amount of fun there.

it's a shameless shrine to capitalism and all the depravity money can buy - all the things that are wrong about the world, basically. and it's bloody brilliant.

My holiday will involve doing 12-hour shifts in the Eurovision press centre on Friday and Saturday. Vegas sounds decent by comparison.

Even the desserts are feeling the strain and have gone all weird today

I would quite like to do a trip to Vegas but it would only be for a proper mad session. I dont think the gambling would draw me in too much but the house scene in LV is meant to be v good. The pool parties are meant to be amazing but i reckon am getting on a bit for that lark.

Speaking of America's great cities, going to Chicago in a couple of weeks. I am on business but as its over the weekend am going to visit the Museum of Contemporary art on the Sunday afternoon and have booked a couple of tickets for the House of Blues on the Saturday night. Last time i was there i saw B.B. King. This time the Saturday night gig is Kings and Queens of House Music featuring Cece Peniston, Martha Wash, Ten City, Jellybean Benitez, Steve 'silk' Hurley, Farley Jackmaster Funk, Mike Hitman Wilson etc.

Get in. Best bit is i have 2 tickets but potentially no one else who will go with me as funnily enough not many of my colleagues are nostalgic for early Chicago house classics and the heady days of ecstasy and flashing lights.

I'd go to that quite happily. Loads of rich arabs singing along to Gold, whats not to like?

My holiday is coming up next month.

Going to Copenhagen, then Malmo, Stockholm, Helsinki, Oslo and back to Newcastle via Edinburgh. It's a lot of flying for a valium guzzler such as myself, but I reckon it's time I manned up since it's for my 30th.

We're just in each place for a few days so if anyone has any recommendations on things to do/see/eat/drink, please fire away as we want to be well prepared. :)

Stockholm, definitely the Old City. Helsinki the harbour by far is the best place to be but if you want to look at how Finnish farm houses from the olden days then Seurasaari is the go, it's an outdoor Museum, can get there by bus. They usually have traditional dancing and music going on there during the summer.

I've only been to Copenhagen Airport, but some of the more... interesting people I know here in the Eurovision press centre were quite taken by Christiania when they were there last year (although apparently it's overly commercialised these days #hipster).

Did two weeks in Malmö and didn't really find a restaurant I'd actively recommend, but if the weather's good, grab a falafel wrap from one of the million fast food places in the Möllevången neighbourhood (keywords: immigrants, integration, a place in Sweden that has a bit of actual personality) and go and sit in the Folkets Park, which is a cool mix of counterculture, bad sculpture and children's playgrounds. The "pavilion" in the middle of it is a good place for an overpriced drink (well, it is Scandinavia) and a bit of people-watching.

Been to Stockholm at least ten times and haven't really found a restaurant I'd actively recommend (there's a theme developing here), but as mentioned above, the old city/Gamla Stan is great for pottering around, both by day and by night. If you're going to do one museum in Stockholm I'd make it the Vasa Museum, which is on the next island along from the old city - it's just a big boat, but my, what a big boat. Then take a wander across the nearby bridge to Kastellholmen island for some good views.

Speaking of boats, if you've got time then make sure you go on a rather more modern boat trip, because Stockholm is basically built on the water and it's pretty gorgeous. There's loads of different operators who run various trips from the waterfront just around from the old city, so you can opt for a 90-minute spin around the more central areas or an entire day trip out around the entire archipelago, depending on what weather and time allow.

I was in Helsinki for a week in 1994 and remember precisely nothing about the place.

Oslo, well, there's the park with all the weird statues, that's a must. If you've got time and you want to get out of the city a bit, take the metro up to Holmenkollen and go have a look at the ski jump. Not that there'll be much going on there in the height of summer, but still!

Thanks for all of that. :)

Stockholm:

For pubs, try Wirstroms on Gamla Stan but to be honest anything on Gamla Stan is expensive. I'd avoid eating there but there are some decent restaurants.

The Southside Pub on Hornsgatan (just next to a metro stop on Sodermalm) is where my brother drinks. They know me in there too.

For food, Nytorget 6 (also on Sodermalm but the other side) is good but in 30-40 SEK mark.

If you're feeling adventurous, take the boat out to Sandhamm on the edge of the archipelago, its beautiful and very nice for lunch. Not sure you can do it in a day though.
