Christmas Tree 3015
Daughter (in her 20's) is wanting to have a bash at photography. Her research has lead her to looking for a 2nd hand Nikon D3100. Does that sound about right and if so is there any where good to find them other than eBay / Gumtree. Happy Face 29
My Mrs and her mam both have Nikon D3...'s and they are champion for selecting auto and clicking away. Winds me up that they make no attempt whatsoever to try any other more manual settings though. I've tried out more stuff than they have on them. Graing 15
Cheers, she's bought it anyway. Suggested she joins the local photography society. TBH the lenses used will make more difference than the unit. I personally like my Canon Rebel T3i, but newer Canons, Nikons, etc. are all fairly good. Looking for a good lens will make more difference than anything. For example, Canon has the Nifty Fifty which is a great prime lens (50mm) with a nice wide aperture. Gives a great shallow field stopped all the way down. Understanding what type of subject she is most interested in shooting will help get her kick-started quicker. And learning to juggle aperture, ISO and shutter speed to get the look you want. Good fun, hope she enjoys it.

JawD 8
My first was the Nikon D3000 which was the model before the 3100. It's a good place to start though as she advances she might find the ISO levels a little restrictive (in low light). a 50mm prime is one of my fave lenses and dirt cheap. Add one of them to the kit lens and that will be a nicer starter set up. Then after that I'd prob get a telephoto or wide angle depending on her preferred subject type. As said, things to read up on : Aperture & Depth of Field (and shooting in A mode) Shutter Speed (and shooting in S mode)

JawD 8
That black spot in the sky looks like it could be dirt on the sensor, take lens off and use a blower thing or (sensible camera cleaning thing) to check. As for the photo, good to get going, only way to improve is to take more and more photos. As she reads up, that photo in 3 months will look very different
Christmas Tree 3015
Cheers JawD. A local photographer (amateur) who I taxi around has recommended a book called "how to take a picture of absolutely everything". Good idea?
Graing 15
Good to see her getting started. Agree with JawD. The great thing is that, unlike the old days where you were burning through rolls of film to practice, we've got SD cards. If she likes landscape shots like this, a good (and relatively cheap) investment would be a tripod or a mono-pod which would allow her to play with longer exposures, etc. without worrying about shakey camera hand. Can't say I've heard of the book you've mentioned, but different perspectives can certainly help grant insight to technique, etc.

Tooj 17
Ignoring my piss-taking CT as somebody that has got past the beginners stage (well I think so anyway) I'm more than happy for you to pass on any tips or answer any questions you ask on her behalf. I'd also recommend her signing up to a forum for feedback on her things, as that helped me along massively.
