"Abel Hernandez can leave Palermo. The attacker wants to change the air after so many years, we talked about the survey of Turin and the contacts are confirmed. If you were starting Cerci the uruguiano would be a very pleasing profile. Meanwhile, there is a negotiation going on with Newcastle, he's ready to put on the plate around 10 million euro. A figure far from the demands of Palermo, but it is. It can be a track coming weeks"

A 24-year-old striker who's scored 31 in 111 for Palermo. Who's this quote from, anyway? His agent?

He's spent the Cabaye money man, everythings rosy!

In a little over 1000 days we sold almost a full team of notable players...

Milner

N'zogbia

Given

Martins

Duff

Beye

Bassong

Carroll

Nolan

Enrique

Some before relegation, most just after, a couple after promotion.

In the same period since selling Enrique we've sold Ba, Cabaye and Debuchy.

I'm cautious about criticising the club for what's been done rather than what they're doing.

It might be that we just don't have the players in our squad anymore that can be sold at a large enough profit, but the major issue with our team for me right now is Pardew, not the approach to squad building.

My main issue is we rarely go to lengths to keep current star players when the bid comes in. Ba, Cabaye and Debuchy were all in the blue chip bracket. I won't be surprised if Tiote is next.

Plus you get the manager openly touting certain players in the media, saying we're vulnerable to bids, essentially inviting them, while confirming our status as a stepping stone club

Do we not also have a much smaller squad? I mean, it's hard to sell our 2nd choice specialist right back when we don't actually own one.

Mind you, looking at the players gone, there are few in the 1st thousand days that I'm too bothered about with the benefit of hindsight.

Devil's Advocate Hat firmly on, but what if it's working?

Selling players is perfectly acceptable and probably should be encouraged, especially when teams are paying well over the odd and a replacement is lined up - e.g. Debuchy: 12m and Janmaat: 5m; Nolan: 3.5m and Cabaye: 5.5m.

It's the not buying we all have the issue with.

Cabella clearly could have came in last January. Debuchy was delayed six months over 500k. Remy went to QPR ffs.

The man is a right cheap skate and doesnt care how good the starting 11 is, as long as we stay up. These two players at Lyon are the current "wait until the price drops".

All had years left on their contracts so didnt have to be sold.

Ba especially seemed daft to me. We sold for £7m someone we'd have to pay double that to replace BEFORE wages. Why not just give him the wages he's asking for.

Of course, we never did replace him so that was why

Aye.

If the transfer funds the manager gets is only what can be made from sales, then that sort of penny-pinching is understandable. The frustration is that we have a big wedge sat there doing nothing right now.

My view is they'll maintain the current sell to buy approach, any profits on top of that will only be used for players in the event of a rainy day, which would be if we're relegation threatened come January.

Would he even have considered a new deal?

How can you use Debuchy £12m Janmaat £5m as an example that should be encouraged without having any idea whatsoever how good the latter will turn out to be. Selling top players and replacing with unknown quantities definitely shouldn't be encouraged.

You have to be realistic. Debuchy was always likely follow Cabaye out the door.

So it's more about having a plan.

Sure we have no idea how the player will work out, but you can't fault the way we handled the transfer.

Cisse and Ba couldn't play together and at the time (the summer before he left) Cisse was the better player. So I can understand the resistance to rocking the wages boat.

Its a lot worse looking back knowing the Ba money came in the same window QPR nabbed Remy.

We could easily have got Ba back this window, so maybe there's more too it.

We should have been persuading him to stay by showing him that we can match his ambitions. I can accept that we're a mid-tabled unambitious stepping-stone club now, but praising it, nah.

How do you persuade him to stay when Arsenal make a 12m bid?

Money is the only thing I can think of; and Debuchy simply isn't that good to be throwing money at.

Almost everyone is a stepping stone club these days. Tottenham regularly sell their top player. Suarez has just left Liverpool.

As long as you get top fees and line up a replacement I don't see what's the big deal.

You show him that we're looking to compete with Arsenal, with intent in the transfer market. This is only a ridiculous idea to those that have succumbed to the lower expectations campaign. Debuchy is hardly a Suarez or Bale either, who are clearly exceptional cases. Losing players to Real Madrid and Barca I can accept. I did when Woodgate went. We're not even in the tier below them now. We're in the tier below the one below them, losing our players to clubs that we should be trying to compete with.

Going by his own quotes, build a new training pitch.
