I can't understand the fascination with Souness's hypocrisy in this thread. I don't think there is a single member of this forum who actually wants Souness here (no not even Gemmil) so to argue his weaknesses here is totally irrelevant.

What is, is our need for a striker (and leftback, centreback, and god knows what else) and despite Anelka probably being no ones first choice he does seem like the most realistic decent option. Better than signing some Egyptian certainly!

BTW if you take way the Man City comments (which I'm not convinced by) then all his problems look pretty historic.

Well, I am unsure about the way Anelka's stint with City ended. 'Le sulk' tried to instigate a move to a "bigger club". Part of it was declaring himself injured/unfit to play, something Keegan didn't believe... Now where I have heard this before?

IMHO Anelka is the cross-breeding of Bellamy and Robert...

If we can afford to spend 6M on Le Sulk on a loan/transfer type deal why don't we go after Ashton (they want 7M) with a similar deal. Also Earnshaw wants out, so West Brom would probably let him go on a loan.

What is it with Newcastle and their refusal to loan players?

I think Earnshaw would be a good signing on loan with the option to buy, scored 15 goals wasn't it in his debut prem season?

Anelka would also be a good signing but at 6 million when we've already spent 50 seems a little steep. Ideally we could get him on loan, thus we won't be stuck with a player who'll want out in future (based on his previous record, and how quickly he seems to have grown tired of playing in Turkey...).

Both would be nice, we need some mobility up front.
