Time to wheel out the old cliche but the first session is crucial. If root and bairstow can build a partnership we have destructive batters down the order capable of taking the game away from them. Any score above 300 to 350 and it's a long way back for the Aussies.

Definitely. Aussies need quick wickets. Got to be aiming to give away as small a lead as possible. I think the aim will be to take 7/100 or thereabouts this morning. Problem is the pitch will be at its best for batting today, so taking quick wickets will be a challenge.

England's scoring rate is a worry at the moment too. Australia could take 7 for not many before lunch or give away 140 runs without taking a wicket. If the latter happens the game is gone.

Bairstow obviously hasn't faced much decent short bowling at county level because he didn't play that well at all. Haven't seen a replay yet but it looked like he had his gloves up above his head.

Edit: Almost. It was a perfect short ball in Bairstow's defence.

Stokes hasn't much better.

This had the look of a pitch Johnson could make good use of yesterday. Not sure what took him so long to start trying to knock heads off.

300 test wickets for Johnson. Some achievement and a great comeback story whatever happens in the remainder of his career.

totally agree about johnson. he's such a different player to the one who was hammered on his last tour here. he's the one that all of our batsmen fear when he gets it right.

I don't know if you lads have to endure Ian Healy's commentary on the English coverage, but god is he unbearable. I'm going for Australia and I can barely handle his constant cheerleading brainless twaddle.

Supposed to be a really nice bloke as well which makes it an even better story.

Big wicket.

Now we need to run through the tail like Gem through a hot plate of Deep Fried Vagetarian Rolls on a lonely Friday night, and we're in business.
