I always wondered if Smith might come unstuck at some point. Obviously he's been in unreal form with the bat for a few years now but he looked ropey as on his first ashes tour.

His technique is so unorthodox, it was hard to believe that someone who batted like that could score so heavily and consistently

Great to see this young kid picked - baptism of fire for him on the pitches India are rumoured to be preparing but it'll be interesting to see how he goes

I was reading they've prepared quite lush pitches to negate our reverse swing threat but which means they won't be rank turners from day one. Sounds like there might be something in them for everyone. I hope so because the last few tours have been pretty dull largely because of the lifeless nature of the pitches.

Yeah, I was amazed he went into score as many runs as he did with the way he shuffles around at the crease. Obviously it's worked for him but he never looked the sort of player to average close to 60 in tests going on what I've seen of him.

No buttler then? He was being talked up for a recall as a specialist batter

Doesn't sound like it. It's difficult to pick someone who's only played one red ball game in a year. He's a definite talent but if he wants to play test cricket he's going to need to play some county games.

Voges has an unbelievable average for someone who looks anything but a good player every time I've seen him.

He's solid enough. Probably a mid-to-low-40s average type of player long term. But he's 37. One run of bad form (like now) and he'll be dropped and that'll be it for him.

On the average, I think Jimmy Adams had a similar average after a similar number of games. I think that's about Voges' level. Solid, but nothing special.

Aye clearly he must be or he'd have nothing like the average he has. Has he scored most of his runs in Australia? Got a century on his debut didn't he?

Yeah. He's done really well in Oz. And, yeah, on the debut 100. He went one summer basically without being dismissed, too.

I don't think he's great. But he's not a liability either. Just a solid Test cricketer. Saying that, if he fails next Test, I think his position will come under threat, mostly because of his age.

It's Ali's own fault he's ended the day on 99.  He should have got at least the two he needed from the full toss that he was given first ball of the last over.  Excellent knock by him regardless.

Good first day for us and I'd think we'd be pretty content if all of the pitches play like that over there.  It was nowhere near the strips in Bangladesh.

sounds like a proper CEO wicket, this one. i can't see us bowling them out cheaply. all set for a draw, barring a massive england collapse in the second innings, which obviously can never be ruled out.

My mate (who would also nicely fit your name) has just text me something very similar.  I'm waiting til the ball gets a bit older and see if we can get it reversing before making a judgement.

@@Alex

it's a featherbed, with little in it for the bowlers, designed to go the full five days, bringing in as much money as possible for the chief executive at the expense of the game a spectacle.

There's a fair few cracks in it and they were getting it to reverse without having the quality of quicks we have.  Day 3 is key.

i haven't been able to watch any of it like, so you could well be right. i'm just guessing based on the kinds of pitches they've served up against us on recent tours

I've woke up early the last couple of days so I've seen most of it.  It's not a minefield and they're saying it doesn't look like it will really break up that much, but all the commentators are still saying it was a key toss to win so I think there's still a reasonable chance of a result.  We'll have to bowl well tomorrow though as we didn't really put them under much pressure in that last session today.
