Aye no big collapse today but gave away too many daft wickets to have a real chance. Will need some big performances from the top order in the second innings to get the draw. At least the pitch hasn't fell apart.

I suspect Broad was a bit unlucky there.

Could be way more attacking like. England aren't even considering the run chase. There goes Cook and any hopes of saving the match

Yeah. I hope England hang in there. You never know. Kohli seems to want to wait for the opposition to give their wicket away, forgetting that it's a Test and the batsmen have no reason to do so (because the batsman aren't Australian). He did the same against SA last year and they nearly batted for something like 150 overs to save a game. They only fell in a heap at the end when the bowlers were exposed. It's horrible captaincy. I thought Dhoni was bad. Kohli is far far worse. It's the type of captaincy that deserves to fail just from an aesthetic standpoint.

He doesn't really need to be a brilliant captain, particularly batting first at home.

Duckett is having a mare facing Ashwin but you can't really bring Ballance back in. The alternative is a recall for Buttler, who hasn't played any long form cricket for about a year.

Expected this result but there are positives to take from the game. Hameed again, who looks a genuine openener despite his figures. And Rashid looking like he could become a frontline spinner is encouraging. Need to win the toss and bat first next time if we're to get anything out of the series.

So looks like Bairstow is going to bat up at 5 with Buttler in at 7 as a specialist batsman in the next test. This is something I'd advocated previously but it'll be tough for Bairstow to keep wicket in India and bat at 5. I think he's capable of doing both, but at the same time? Well see.

Buttler has still got a bit to prove at test level. You don't often see a specialist batsman down at 7. Hopefully the pressure will be offf him. He could always be bumped up the order as a pinch hitter if we needed to set a big target quickly.

That will probably be a good move. Pragmatic at least, given the personnel available to them. It's all about batting for as long as possible in the first innings, whether you win or lose the toss. If they bat for 130-150 overs they should give themselves a chance in the game. As long as they're not chasing the game England's attack are capable of bowling a team out on a wearing 2nd innings pitch, despite the negativity of the press. Including buttler should help them to do this and I reckon Bairstow will be fine at 5 - he's been in early in the innings plenty in this past year due to England's fragile top order
