They have gone downhill since they couldn't waste time and over rates with those long run ups.

Was talking to Tooj about them a while back and I said the only thing I couldn't accept about them in their pomp was the disgraceful over rates. Not that I agree that's the main reason for their decline like

Bet the crowd are pleased however as the next 3 in should provide some fireworks between them.

aye, they'll all be a few pints deep by now so should be a lively session. a few will probably be hoping cook goes sooner rather than later, just for the entertainment of seeing bairstow and stokes having a dart with 450 runs already on the board - when was the last time that happened?

Was genuinely a bit gutted listening to TMS on Saturday afternoon to the very last time Henry Blofeld would be on there. Have absolutely loved listening to him down the years. What a send off though

Some good crack/craic/crayke from I.T. Botham re: Paul Coughlin leaving Durham

http://www.durhamccc.co.uk/news/coughlin-to-leave-dccc/

Looks like Jennings (probably Notts too) and quite possibly Onions will be going too.  Onions only being offered a one year four day contract which will be a drop in wages from his current all formats contract (despite only playing the one format) while he's been offered two years and the chance of a coaching position elsewhere so you can understand it if he goes at his age.  I wouldn't be surprised if they aren't the only ones to go by the sounds of it.  It's looking a bit glum for them.  Stoneman, Borthwick, Coughlin, Jennings, Onions, Muchall & Mustard all gone in a 12 month period.  Wood is never fit and Stokes very rarely plays these days (I'd imagine he'll be away to the IPL again next season if the England schedule allows).  They're running out of established pro's (Collingwood and Rushworth is about it).

More positively, apparently they're in discussions with Latham (who's done well replacing the poor Cook) to be their captain accross all formats next season.

That seems to have been pretty much what they've been doing this season without a massive amount of success.  Even without the points deduction they'd only be lower mid table.  Burnham seems to be very highly rated but he's struggled so far.  Potts was away with England U19's earlier in the summer and seemed to do well.  But it seems like they need another two or three senior players alongside the likes of Collingwood and Rushworth.  Getting Latham back again would be a start.

Police confirm he's being investigated for ABH

He's a daft lad like. Mrs and 2 kids at home (he's just bought a £1.5mil house at Ramside Hall apparently), earns £2.5mil pa just from his central contract and IPL deal, probably another £1mil+ pa from sponsors and he might end up in jail or struggling to get a visa to go abroad.

Being pissed and in the street at 2.30am when you are one of the most famous cricketers in the country is always going to attract dickheads.

It's easy to pontificate. But I don't need to tell you that.

They're still allowed a life and to let off steam, especially when they hardly see the family you're on about. The pressures of the modern game and the time the players spend away from home is unprecedented and fucking ridiculous from the point of view of actually having something approaching a normal life. Plus, no one really knows what went down yet. Expecting them to never go out and all that isn't really fair imo. Not saying he wasn't daft on this occasion. Don't think it'll affect his career one bit tbh

I just think it's mental (not to mention completely hypocritical) to expect young lads with loads of money (and fame) to behave like saints. It's never going to happen and most people who have a pop at them would be worse (but lack the dedication to get there in the first place). I just mean that generally, not in regard to this particular incident. People think they own people's lives and the way they can behave just because they're famous (and the old classic 'pay their wages').

And if there's one other person who's influenced me in that way I think, someone who is a maverick, someone who does that to the system, then, it's Ian Botham. Because Beefy will happily say "that's what I think of your selection policy, yes I've hit the odd copper, yes I've enjoyed the old dooby, but will you piss off and leave me alone, I'm walking to John O'Groats for some spastics."

I never said that though tbf. But there's letting off steam and then there's being arrested for ABH at nearly 3am after a game. It's not like he hasn't got previous either. He was booted off the lions tour for getting pissed. He missed a chunk of he season with a broken hand for punching an inanimate object too.

I get that he's innocent until proven guilty and all that but he's knacked his hand, the other lads gone to hospital and he's been arrested for ABH. There aren't too many gaps to fill

Only two openers in that, one of whom has had three tests. We're going to get spanked, particularly if the reports about stokes missing the first two tests because of a broken hand, or possibly not going at all after being arrested, are true.

Vince, Ballance, Malan - even Jennings - are being rumoured as having a chance of making the plane, despite none of them looking suited to test cricket.

where is Hameed, Wood, Hales, Rashid etc?

Hameed's just broken his finger playing for Lancs. On TMS recently, Swann said England (and the man himself) really only consider Rashid to be a white ball specialist at international level. There's the fitness issue with Wood as well. I'd have taken Hales* though, without a doubt. Has experience as an opener, could play at 3 where he's played a lot for Notts and could also play in the middle order.

*Ahead of Vince and Ballance.
