He should re-join England's ODI squad immediately in Australia and replace one of Woakes or Moeen in the starting team. I am assuming that the ECB told him that he would come back for the NZ tour 2 months ago so he had been preparing for that eventuality.

So he’s dropped whilst the investigation is ongoing and he’s been charged with nowt.

Then the CPS have enough evidence to charge him with a crime and he’s allowed to start playing again?

Assume they were waiting to see how serious the charge was and, given it's affray, it's not very serious. Agree the ECB haven't handled it very well though.

Be a disappointment if this lot can't win a World Cup. not because I think they're far and away the best side in the world, just they're a very talented side and the best we've had for a very long time (at least back to the side of the late 80s - which I would compare to its peers rather than today's side - can't believe Bill Athey used to get a game  ).

A very good side. The summer of cricket here was getting very boring let me tell you. Nice to see the poms pick up a few consolatory accolades on their tour here.

 Easy to say when you have a decent team playing in that format.

ODI's aren't a fan's favourite because of the middle overs being perceived to be tedious and  boring. Younger generations have a shorter attention span.

That being said, this pitch is slow and grippy and 300 is a good score. Your spinners should be effective in this. Battlers will need to force things as the ball softens up. Baffles me why we don't play Lyon. Playing him here was a no-brainer.

I don’t really follow the BBL or the IPL closely but Lyons has played some T/20, hasn’t he? I don’t know if they’re trying to preserve his career for the Test side or if it’s purely down to his batting but I thought the same as you.

I wouldn't say crushed. 303 is a very reachable target. I will be switching between this and the tennis tonight.

Agreed. This total looks about 50 runs light. In the modern ODO

Turns out you lads know nowt.

Congrats on the win. The batting your lot did in the last 5 overs or so made the difference in the end.

Only watched the first 10 overs of our innings and when Warner and White were dismissed I knew we were in an uphill battle to win. The pool looked too good to refuse after that.

We have the players to win but not the correct team selections or tactics. The way you played particularly in Melbourne took us by surprise and we responded poorly thereafter.

Nice to see your lot have something to cheer tbh

He has gone back to playing BBL and bowling well. For all the faults that the ECB have the same can be said for Cricket Australia. Some players are pigeon holed for some reason.

The likes of plunkett and Rashid, even Hales seem to have been written off as one day specialists which I don’t get.

Rashid was turning it sharply today. I’d like to see him given another go at tests. He can bat a bit too. Plunkett not being considered for the Ashes was a strange one given the speed he can bowl at. Alright he hasn’t played a lot of 4 or 5 day cricket lately but it’s horses for courses. And if you’re going to persevere with Vince, why not give Hales a go further down the order.

we really missed Wood in the ashes too. He was class today.

Aye, you'd think that he'd do a more than decent job in ODIs, especially given how good a test bowler he is, if he's effective in T/20.

I think the Bristol incident (as well as his decision not to go to Bangladesh)  might have fucked Hales chances in tests.  He might well have been in with a shout of the Ashes had it not been for his suspension until well into the series.  Personally I would have a go with him.  Yes he wasn't great opening when picked for the test team but he doesn't open for Notts so I think it was a mistake to try him in that position then ditch him.  He's shown in the shorter formats he can bat against international bowlers so I'd definitely be interested in him further down the order.

I thought Wood and Woakes were superb yesterday at the death.  Obviously Butlers onslaught at the end of the innings (against Australia's first choice bowlers) deserves the majority of the plaudits but Woakes with him and then him and Wood with the ball deserve a lot of credit.

the top 4 got 3 runs between them

the aggressive mindset is what has transformed the english one day side, and shouldn't be coached out of them, but you have to play the game situation. if wickets are tumbling, someone has to dig in and hang around, even in today's era of par scores of over 300. wickets in hand means the likes of buttler can aim for 15+ an over with 5 or 6 to go. good effort from the bowlers to get so close with so few runs on the board though.

also, typically english not to secure the whitewash. if the aussies were in similar position, they'd be going all out to rub our noses in the dirt. the english way is to ease off once the hard work is done. i didn't see the game - how many of ours were out to loose shots?

I only saw the last couple of our wickets.  Apparently there was some good balls in there but you still have to think they should have played the situation better.

I can't help but think this mindset, while great for the shorter forms, is harming us in test matches.  I don't think it ultimately made that much difference in the ashes because they just had a team better suited to playing over there.  But I do think there are other matches that we are losing that we could have won had we been able to change the way we play to suit the situation.
