Looking for mother nature to assist with your chances isn't good.  We have made our first error by retaining Siddle in this side.  I think we can overcome this slight oversight though

Recall for the cokehead?

Would be no different.  England players have been drilled on white ball cricket for two years, to win the World Cup, and have had basically no red ball cricket.

It requires a different mind set, and the ECB have decided that the best way to move cricket along in the country is to start another white ball competition.

I don’t see why Roy couldn’t do a counter attacking job at 5 or 6. He may still come good at the top of the order. If Warner or Sehwag can open, why not? His technique is sound, he just needs to learn what to leave and rein himself in.

The problem, as RR alluded to, is we don’t have enough red ball specialists. It’s alright having counter punchers like Roy, Buttler, Bairstow, Moeen Stokes or even Hales in the side but the middle order lacks balance. It would be nice to have the luxury of breaking up the destructive batters with a player capable of dropping anchor, like collingwood.

That’s not to say these players are incapable of playing the conditions. But they need to work on their test match mindset sharpish.

Yes, he’s by far the best test match cricketer of that lot and has played some mature innings, but he is a destructive batsman - capable of taking the game away from the opposition it’s his day or gifting his wicket away cheaply if it isn’t. Nothing wrong with that style of play but it feels like we’re trying to pick one or two too many batsmen cut from that cloth.

Well that’s one way to get him out. Shame to see him retire hurt but looks like we finally found a bowler in archer who can make him uncomfortable. The first one that hit his arm put doubt in his mind for the first time all series
