Was interesting to hear Boycott's view on our preparation for the series.  It really couldn't have gone much worse when you think about it.  We had three batsmen who had massive question marks over them ahead of the series (with only Malan coming through the test), no first choice spinner, no pace in the attack without Wood, the Stokes situation and warm up games against the equivalent of playing Cramlington seconds.  If we want to improve as a test side and be able to win games away from home, the ECB needs to seriously look at changing things so we aren't so one dimensional.  I'm not sure there will be any great desire to do this mind as there's not many teams in the world who can really look good away from home.  India were imperious at home last year but got stuffed by S.A. in the first test this week.  It's going to end up with another problem for test cricket because the crowds are already dwindling and if series aren't competitive it will only get worse.

The thing is, the ECB are most concerned about what happens on your own turf and they are dysfunctional. Have heard enough stories about them - Liam Livingston being told not to play at 3 but 5 in county cricket because that is what they see him in the future if he were to make it to the England team.  You play your players up the order to get experience ffs.

Record crowds in Australia mate. England need to keep up. You aren't exactly at the forefront in other forms either.

Well Australia have moved from 5th to 3rd in the Test rankings, swapping places with us on the back of the usual home win in an Ashes series. We're level on points in the ODI rankings and well ahead on the T/20 ones. tl:dr Ken the mackem spouting shite

Even in the Ashes crowds will start to dip (they certainly appeared to in the last two tests, barring boxing day, once you'd won) if the home teams just keep winning all the time.  You enjoy beating us as we enjoy beating you but the same things happening every time will get boring.

It will be interesting to see how we do in the white ball games.  We have really improved in this area since the last world cup so it will be the perfect test to see how we do this time where it all went wrong last time.  The ECB has put a lot of focus in this area and not enough on the test side imo.  Don't let the fact that we don't have a BBL or IPL in this country make you think we cant play short form.   Stokes will be a miss again (for the ODI's at the very least) but Hales, Butler, Rashid, Roy, Billings, Wood, Plunkett as well as Root, Bairstow, Moeen and Woakes are all good white ball players.  And in Rashid, Wood and Plunkett (as well as Willey) we have bowlers who can provide some of the things that the test team lacked down under.

mad that some of the names in the ODI squad (plunket, rashid, wood - even Hales and Buttler  - weren't considered for the test side. There's talk of moving Malan up to 3 in tests. I'd give Hales a go at 5 against NZ. you could even play bairstow as a specialist batter at 5 so he's not always stuck with the tail) and have Buttler come in at 7, with the license to have a dart.

What about Hales at 3 (he was an opener and only lost his place due to refusing to tour Bangladesh) and leave Malan at 5?  Not sure it is worth having Buttler and Bairstow in the test team.  If he comes back, Stokes should be at 6, Bairstow at 7, Moeen at 8, with Broad, Anderson and another making up the numbers.

The crowds dipped in Melbourne in the latter part of the match because people could see that given the shittyness of the pitch a result was improbable bordering on the impossible. In Sydney people stayed home because it was just too bloody hot. I agree that competitiveness is key and that was the point I was making in my earlier post re. the ECB. We are at least more competitive when we go over to your backyard and the players have not hidden the fact that they are focusing their energy to retain the Ashes already. Winning over on your turf is the holy grail. A couple of players are willing to miss the big pay days in the IPL to play county cricket, Shaun Marsh being one of those.

I agree, the games will be a lot closer in the ODI's, your squad for them is stronger than the squad that played in the test series which is a good thing as it keeps things interesting. I want to see good games, not just good old fashioned pommy bashings like we saw throughout the majority of the test series.

It makes sense to me to have Bairstow as high up the order as possible.  Behind Root and Cook he's our most consistent batsman.  I know it's been said he doesn't want to lose the gloves but I would have him at five and bring Buttler in lower down.  Buttler hasn't played much red ball cricket for a while, and when he has played for Lancashire it's not like he's been a massive success, but he's such a destructive player player I'm sure we'd get some good runs from him even if it might be inconsistently.

The way Malan has played in the Ashes it looks like he would be capable of taking the number 3 position.  Moving him after a successful (personally) series might not be the best and if Stokes isn't available for the NZ series, I don't think it will happen.  But longer term it might be the solution.  Cook, Hameed, Malan, Root, Bairstow, Ali, Buttler, Woakes, Broad, Anderson might be what we should be looking to until we have some real pace and spin options.

i suppose the issue with a middle order of hales at 5, then stokes, buttler and moeen, is they're all very aggressive. on it's day they'll destroy teams but there's no collingwood type to dig in and try to drop anchor amid a collapse.

I'm not convinced Hales at 5 is the answer and the middle order isn't really a concern. I think we have to give Crane a bit of a go. He bowled much better than his figures suggested at Sydney from the highlights I saw (he definitely bowled some cracking deliveries). What's the point in bringing someone in then not giving them more chances even if show some promise? I wouldn't change things too much but would possibly look at bringing Hameed in and I think Stoneman did enough to warrant further opportunities. If they, along with Cook could bring some stability to 1,2,3 then with Root at 4 and Stokes returning at some point then the middle order starts to look solid again. I think the likes of Roland-Jones and Wood coming back into contention makes for some decent bowling options too. I think a decision probably needs to be made about Moeen or Woakes with one or the other making way dependent on conditions, form etc. (obviously injuries to other bowlers notwithstanding). Be nice to see some long term planning put into place regarding nurturing quicks and spinners and not just chasing the white ball money as well. It would help if cricket was actually played in schools as well. It's little wonder so many players are drawn from independent schools and from South Africans, etc. with English heritage when the state schools don't even have school teams or decent pitches. It's been that way for as long as I can remember despite the ECB getting unprecendented amounts of money. It's just like the FA / Premier League tbh. Will we ever learn? Actually, it's not like they don't know the score, they just have cunts like Giles Clarke who only care about the bottom line (even if he has been replaced now).

Now you're comparing me to essembee are you? You have gone way too far now. Stop aiming for my balls.

Mark Wood has looked lively in this first white ball game. The ball he delivered to get Warner out was a peach. Has consistently bowled at 140-146kph. Plunkett doing ok too. Good contest so far...

Was nice to hear the Aussie commentators gutted about getting convincingly beat.

I did sleep through quite a bit of out bowling but from what I did see it was a complete role reversal of the tests. Wood and Plunkett looked dangerous regularly and Ali seemed to bowl with a bit of control. Whereas we rarely looked threatened.  Basically it was a much more enjoyable watch.

Stokes has been charged with affray.  Not really sure what this means but I'd think its a lesser charge than what it was feared he could have been charged with.  Most likely a slap on the wrist?

Will almost certainly only get a fine if found guilty. It's basically fighting in a public place causing disorder as opposed to being charged with assaulting someone or ABH etc.

I think it means fighting in public. I assume the other 2 blokes charged are the ones he was fighting with. Maximum sentence of 3 years but he’s more likely to get a fine and community service

He was probably hoping the case was dropped but it’s better for him that all 3 are charged than just him being charged for assault

Aye that's what I was thinking.  I know the ECB said they would convene within 48 hours but I'm not sure whether that will be from now or after he's been to court.
